Hessmania Forever
The other thing to keep in mind with Bauer is that he's never really been that good in his career. He has a career 113 ERA+, one great full season (2018), one great 70-inning stretch (this year) and otherwise a bunch of pretty meh campaigns. Teams have bet on his upside because of his former draft status and his stuff, but even if you set aside the locker room and off-field nonsense (which I don't really care about), you're talking about a soon-to-be 30-year-old pitcher with a fairly unimpressive track record. Certainly wouldn't mind having him on the team, but you wouldn't be buying a surefire ace.
Bauer is Exhibit A why pitchers often take a little bit of time to take the next step. He was solid up until 2018 when he really took off, but he has really taken off. I'm throwing out pretty much everybody's stats for 2020. I don't think it's likely Bauer will match this year's performance because it was so dominant, but he'll be in the upper tier of pitchers.
