GDT : Braves vs Reds game 2

The other thing to keep in mind with Bauer is that he's never really been that good in his career. He has a career 113 ERA+, one great full season (2018), one great 70-inning stretch (this year) and otherwise a bunch of pretty meh campaigns. Teams have bet on his upside because of his former draft status and his stuff, but even if you set aside the locker room and off-field nonsense (which I don't really care about), you're talking about a soon-to-be 30-year-old pitcher with a fairly unimpressive track record. Certainly wouldn't mind having him on the team, but you wouldn't be buying a surefire ace.

Bauer is Exhibit A why pitchers often take a little bit of time to take the next step. He was solid up until 2018 when he really took off, but he has really taken off. I'm throwing out pretty much everybody's stats for 2020. I don't think it's likely Bauer will match this year's performance because it was so dominant, but he'll be in the upper tier of pitchers.

I'm not sure why anyone expects we'd even have a shot at him. Since when are we able to bid on the most expensive players on the market?

The thought with Bauer was that he was a 3ish guy who wanted to go year to year. That’s exactly the type of player AA seems to target. Impact players for A single season at $20M is AAs favorite addition.

Now that he’s supposedly an Ace CYA stud, he’s probably too expensive for the Braves. It will be interesting if he is really willing to turn down $120M+ over 5ish years in favor of a $30M+ deal for one season in a ploy to maximize his earnings over the long term. It seems like an unnecessary risk on his part.

Boom! What a game. We did it! YES YES YES! MVP goes to the pitching staff, for sure. 22 shutout innings. Incredible.

Lmao

He wasn't wrong. They gave a lot of fans nightmares this week.

How great was young Iain Anderson today? 6 scoreless with 9k in his first postseason start. I feel very, very good about our top 3 starters now. And if Wright continues his developing, watch out.

This fastball/change up overlay here is just sick

I don't necessarily believe we do. He appears to be an outside-the-box guy, so who knows what he's looking for (except a ton of money). My point is that it can take pitchers a few years of big league experience before they blossom. Maybe Bauer's a meteor who upped his game dramatically but won't be able to maintain it, but he was golden this year. It's just something to keep in mind when we are critiquing our own young pitchers.

I wonder what he's really looking for on a 1 year deal. More than 35 million?

No idea. This has never been attempted before, and MLB finances aren't really set up to handle it. That's the logical hole in Bauer's plan.

Teams pay star players $30M per year in their decline years when they are worth far less so they only have to pay them $30M in their prime years when they are worth far more. For example, a team can't pay Trout $60M+ in a single season because of luxury tax and cash flow limitations even though he's worth it. So they pay him $300M over 10 years to even it out and match their cash flows and luxury tax restrictions.

Bauer is almost certainly worth $35M+ for a single peak season, but how are teams going to fit contracts like that on the books? If he wants to go season to season to maximize career earnings, he needs to cash in huge on his prime years because his decline years won't be worth much year to year...and how much salary can teams actually add for a single season? This practical limitation may be more of a hinderance to his plans than anything.

i think the classic big market teams would be happy to pay Bauer $35M for one year. Red Sox, Yankees. I could see the White Sox doing it. Cubs. if Bauer actually ends up going that route (i'm doubtful), there will be a handful of teams willing to do it.

I'd look for the Angels to jump in too

It's either Bauer or Ozuna. You cant have both. The Braves probably won't go for either. I'd rather have Ozuna myself because he's FUN and seems like a good clubhouse fit.
