GDT: 11/3/20, Election Day, Donald J. Trump vs. Joseph R. Biden

Things could get ugly internally for the Democrats. The main way the moderates, establishment, and far left of the party have held together the last 4 years has been through a shared loathing of Trump. The down ballot defeats have also opened further cracks in the party. Biden is no Obama in terms of uniting the party.

It will be interesting to watch how the Republicans shake out too. Will there be a movement away from Trump? Will the message of populism stay?

Personally, I think the party that moves toward the middle will take a big advantage. I wonder if either will.

Eh, it just leads to party switching.

Really we should have 3 parties, a left, middle and right. You can't tell me that Sununu and Wolf are from the same party as Enzi or Cotton? Same as Donnelly and Gillibrand.

I wonder how much of the turnout was to support a party's extremism and how much was to fight the opposing party's extremism.

A valid question. Even if that were the case, both parties have a reason to keep the other party extreme. It is going to be a mess until one side or both completely and utterly implode. Hopefully it ends up being both.

I'm with you there. I'd be interested to see how a multi-party system would work in the US. 5 or 6 major parties would be interesting.

because he mobilized the crazies.

Wont have that rainmaker any longer unless Lyin' Ted or Lil Marco are up to the task.

I think you have it totally backwards. tell me again the 2020 (R) platform ?

What are they for that will appeal to down ballot voters ?
///////////////

The argument Progressives are making to (D) today is, let's find issues that resonate with down ballot voters.
Health care, environment , reform of ... fill in the blank ( because so much is functionally broken), civil rights etc
you know, far left things

It would be an odd time for such a decision.

credibly accused creepy joe should offer a job as a graceful way for her to step down as speaker...i'm generally a fan of hers...she's a tough negotiator...but i think its time for her to make way for some new leadership

Maricopa County just posted 61K ballots

credibly accused creepy joe lead down to 43K...looks like he will win AZ too...

AZ and GA are nice flips

trump is extreme right

i wouldn't frame it that way

he is extreme in venality, corruption, dishonesty and incompetence

he is extreme in his promotion of lies and disinformation

but as far as ideology goes, there are lots of Republicans (some of whom I regard as decent and honorable people) who are to his right

I do too (and hopeful that is the case) but I think it's a bit premature to say that Republicans have gotten stronger this election. In reality, both parties gained a little in each house, while a Republican POTUS lost re-election. If Dems do manage to get Senate control, this is a pretty big gut punch to the Republicans.

GOP flipped a governorship and took more seats in the house than expected. Everyone I know that voted for Biden, did it because they hate Trump not because they like Biden.

Literally the Democrats have been saying to not accept the results of this election for months.

...."until all the votes are counted" is the rest of what they said. Dingbat. They said that because of exactly what Trump is trying to do.

trump is extreme right, but Biden is far from extreme left?

I honestly don't know what Trump is actually on the political spectrum. He's not a hawk by any means so that doesn't go far right. In fact, he might have had the most successful presidency in terms of middle east peace in recent memory with the deals brokered between Israel and various Arab states.

His did pander to far right extremists and his immigration policy has been pretty far right. Economically he's varies. The tariff stuff doesn't really jive with debt spending.

Trump has far right tendencies but he's not as far right as someone like Ted Cruz.

Yep -- very wrong way of framing things.

He's definitely not a Neo-Con. He's definitely not a fiscal conservative. On social conservatism he's a mixed bag. He's definitely not for the traditional-conservative views on the powers of each branch of government.
