Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

You can probably thank the loss of international picks for that. If AA makes a big-time trade and it turns out terribly for Atlanta, it could be devastating for the farm system. I totally get and agree with the sentiment but I'm guessing that's part of the thinking.

The penalties are starting to show up a bit. We still have a nice set of prospects, but with the loss of the 2020 minor league season for a lot of them, it's difficult to tell what the true depth of the system is. I think the going the over-slot route with a lot of post-10th round guys in 2019 was a reaction to the international penalties and we'll see how that turns out.

It is kind of hilarious--in a gallows humor sense--to see all of the guys the Braves lost through the international penalties showing up on the Rule 5 eligible list. They are all so far away that no one will draft them, but it's amazing how time has flown by on that scandal. It seems like just yesterday.

It’s simply amazing how all that cheating was for a bunch of nothing.

Puason is likely to be the only guy that carries any value that we directly lost out on. Of course, the ban itself hurt the team in an immeasurable way, but probably saved the team with it leading to hiring AA.

Mets getting close to signing James McCann per Rosenthal. Deal expected to be 4 years.

I do think a couple of the guys the Braves signed and had to surrender will play some in the big leagues. I see a handful in teams' Top 30 prospects, but most just finished Low-A in 2019 and a couple of notables have been injured. It would have been interesting to see how they would have done in 2020 in High-A.

4 year deal on a 30 year old catcher. Let’s go mets. McCann would scare me as a fan.

Other than his outlier 2019 year, he has pretty pedestrian numbers. I would have given JTR his money, especially with the DH coming into play in 22/beyond. Mets must be very confident they can get Bauer and Springer.

He was pretty solid last year too. But I would say the pitching in the central is garbage and he will be facing a lot better stuff in the East. I would expect a good player too. But when does that catcher drop off happen would be my concern.

The underlying metrics on McCann suggest his production the last 2 years isn't a fluke. The bad news is he is a 30 year old catcher. If it's 4 guaranteed years, I can't imagine this contract ending well for NY.

Bob Klapisch: #Mets are moving closer to George Springer and/or Trevor Bauer. Ultimate target is TBD. I’m told @StevenACohen2 is leaning towards Springer; Alderson would like to sign Bauer. Either one would be a huge upgrade in Flushing.

I figured they'd go for both. Why not? And oh look, another meddling owner. As we've seen that usually never ends well. Leave the decisions to the baseball people..

Bauer, Degrom is a pretty intimidating top 2 in a rotation. Almost as much as Fried, Soroka.

This has to be one the worst winter meetings I can remember. Even though we have not done anything the past few seasons, there has still be rumors and deals with other teams...

This one, it is dead silence....

It's a weak FA class, and with COVID. Lot of teams dont have much to spend.

Do the people putting the graphics together for MLB Tonight not understand how utterly stupid it is to show how far short of the luxury tax teams are this winter? Just showed that the Cubs are currently $46.1 million shy of it - AS IF THEY'RE ABOUT TO SPEND A BUNCH OF MONEY!!!

Yea, it is a bit eerily quiet. In fact if you look around the league, there don't even appear to be many teams looking to spend at this point.

Springer would make their offense very dangerous. It was already pretty good.
