Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I am interested in how you arrive at this combination. Care to explain?

Anderson has likely has a little more value than Patino right now, given Anderson's successful major league debut and post-season performance. But Patino legit has TOR potential, where as Anderson is likely more a MOR starter.

Riley and Meija are similar in that they are former top prospects who have struggled to produce much at the major league level. Riley may hold slightly more value, but it's not likely enough to here to argue about.

Langeliers and Hunt are extremely similar prospects and are rated the same on Fangraphs. Their value is basically equal.

It's hard to compare Wilcox since he just got drafted after having his college season cut short and hasn't played professionally yet. I personally don't think Muller is a good comparable since he is closer to the majors and has proven success professionally. Schuster is probably a better comp.

Padres are once again going to win the offseason and fans will call Preller a genius.

While the moves are exciting, let’s wait 1-2 seasons to see if he just set them up for a rebuild yet again after not winning anything.

I'll gladly take Tatis off their hands in 3-4 years when they're inevitably in payroll purgatory and he's pulling record arby numbers.

If the Pads get Darvish then that rotation is flat out nasty. Add Contreras to the mix and they will push the Dodgers for the West crown.

Doubt it, Dodgers are still better but Padres are making moves.

While I completely agree fans will overate the moves, I’ll give credit to where it’s due.
The moves they made last season helped them get into the playoffs and should help them not only this season but especially in 2022 when they will have a strong rotation headlined by Snell/Clevenger.
Also for as great as AA has been and continues to be we also have won nothing lol
Hopefully that changes starting this season!

While you're only joking, it's probably fair to consider a Tatis trade as a legitimate possibility at some point when you think about it. They're not likely going to be able to move Machado at any point, so they're locked into $30 million per there through 2028, and we'd probably have heard a lot more about it if they had traction on a deal to lock him up like the Braves have Acuna. While he's certainly no Tatis, they've got Abrams in place and he should be ready to step in when they have two years of control over Tatis left. Even if they didn't completely maximize their return for Tatis and they chose to keep him until he had one year of control left, the huge 2022 free-agent SS class would already have homes and they'd still be able to get a significant return for him in the 2023 offseason. If they do pull off a Darvish trade, they'd control a rotation of Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Paddack, and Gore through 2023 (I'm going to assume that Davies and Weathers will be included in a Darvish trade), along with Tatis, Machado, Hosmer, Myers, Cronenworth, Nola, and Grisham on offense. If Abrams turns into what most experts think he can, it's probably fair to assume they could get at least a controllable young OF and arm for a year of Tatis at that point from a contender that doesn't sign someone from next year's SS class.

The Braves have won 3 straight division titles and took the world champion Dodgers to game 7 of the NLCS after sweeping the Reds and Marlins.

This notion that the Braves aren’t currently an elite organization couldn’t be further from the truth.

Once again, the team making a splash in the offseason will be overrated.

Heyman: Darvish deal to Padres appears close. Talks revolve around a 4 (or so)-for-2 deal w/Darvish’s personal catcher Caratini likely joining him for 2 going to SD. Cubs trying for some MLB experience in return, including needed pitching.

Braves just took the Dodgers to 7 games with a rotation of Anderson, Fried, and a bunch of unproven guys. We've won nothing if your reasoning is WS or bust. AA's done a great job managing the team so far. We'll see if he makes a big trade or signs a deal longer than 1 year this winter. But he's done everything to set the team up to succeed.

Probably have to allow the jury to still be out on that one - until the offseason is over at least. While it's typical of fans to overreact - especially during a painfully slow offseason - it is at least fair to say that they've closed the gap on the Dodgers with a Darvish/Snell/Lamet front of the rotation - for now. If they're able to get Contreras as well without giving up any of their lineup pieces, it's probably also fair to say they're the second best team in the NL heading into the New Year's holiday.

Of course most people tend to forget that the Dodgers will likely add Price to their rotation if he doesn't opt-out again and could decide to flex their financial muscles and add Bauer if they chose to and bounce one of Urias or May to the pen. Is Darvish/Snell a bigger upgrade than Bauer/Price? Certainly a fair question. Whether the Padres remain at #2 as camp nears will probably depend on how much payroll flexibility AA actually has and/or whether there's going to be a DH. I'd imagine all bets are off if AA could sign Ozuna to DH and add a Pederson/Rosario/Mazara and Duvall platoon.

Boob Nightengale: The #Padres are getting catcher Victor Caratini from the #Cubs in the Yu Darvish trade. Catcher Luis Campusano is staying in San Diego and is not part of the deal.
