Selling At the Deadline

We're in No Man's Land right now. It remains to be seen if this team is solid enough--especially in the absence of a healthy and productive Ozuna--to go on a roll to put themselves into playoff contention. I don't know what parts other teams might want. With our luck, Anthopoulos will move Smyly at the deadline and he'll turn out to be the World Series MVP.

Here’s the reality of the situation. We have enough talent available to make a playoff run if it’s managed correctly. That is clearly not the case. I think AA makes some token upgrades to the pen and possibly gets a platoon bat. He just does just enough to show he’s addressing issues. From there he lets Snit sink or swim. Then if the Braves don’t make the playoffs this year I think AA has a good case to fire Snit and will do so.

Braves aren't selling. We just gotta get that high leverage rh reliever and at least one more bat, the sooner the better.

What would it take to get haniger and Kendall graveman or adam Frazier and Rodriguez? One of those deal could turn this around quickly

How do you upgrade a team when you can’t add any money to said team?
This season was torpedoed the minute We signed A number 5 starter with all the money we had available and then AA was informed we are broke and to patch together the rest of the squad.
Ozuna’s contract won’t be settled till after this year and until it is I just don’t see how we could make any moves to improve.
If anything I see us selling what we don’t think will be long term pieces.
This team is Finnish and Ronalds pursuit of 40-40 and our young pitchers continuing to solidify our rotation are the things we need to take interest in.
Besides replacing Ozuna, we have clearly shown we need to upgrade the bench and bullpen to contend next season.
Oh ya and there’s the whole FF contract mess
:(

Wow. You are right. Who could have predicted this? in 2017?

In all fairness we are just having a crappy season. It happens. Especially when you don’t institute a board name properly. But one season is not purgatory. We have a solid core and can rebound just as quick as we collapse. We need to get ozuna money back. And change some coaching. But the tea is still capable of winning it all at some point.

Thru 60, we're 29-31. This next 60 needs to be 35-25 like our 60-game schedule last year. This would put us 64-56 with 42 games to go. I think it's doable (.583 baseball thru next 60 games).

ETA... we need another bat and rh high leverage reliever quickly though

Another arm would be great but we need to utilize what we have correctly too. Stop pitching guys 4 out of 5 nights. Instead extend them 2 innings with 2 days off. Let Greene get going. Trust Jackson and yes I am saying this Newk more. They too can go multiple innings. Start tinkering with an opener so if you do make the playoffs you already know how to deploy it.

Oh and duct tape twit to the bench with a ball gag strapped on.

People on this board seem to have a better grasp of the reality of this team than some of the folks running it.

That is disturbing...

Did you also predict Freeman would win the MVP last year and we would have been 1 game away from a WS berth?

I guess he also predicted that there would be a global pandemic shutting down the economy and “forcing” teams to cut payroll, hurting the ability to upgrade the team.

If we don't plan on giving Freeman a contract, I hope AA has the guts to trade him.

I think it’s a whole if the price is right situation. I can’t imagine AA trades Freeman though. The Braves have always been more concerned with optics over optimization. Plus if AA trades Freeman it kinda takes Snit off the hook.

This - not so much the Snitker part though. When an organization is in this position AND the big club is what many thought it was, I don't think AA has any problem with dictating the right moves to Snitker when it's time for him to. If Alex has to get involved in the on-field decisions, I don't think he'll shy away from doing that. Snit wasn't HIS GUY when he took the job, but he's given him the opportunity to get the team over the top HIS way and it hasn't worked. AA knows how seldom you're this close as a GM, and he'll do what it takes to get there if he has to at the end of the day. He blew everything up trying to win in Toronto when their window was open after all.

Freddie is the tough part. He's the next-coming of Chipper, and Alex rightfully understands what that means in the south where blind fan loyalties are like death and taxes. Whether the numbers (or science) clearly backs you up, there will simply ALWAYS be a large chunk of your fanbase (voting base) that you just have to appease EVEN IF YOU'RE WRONG. People here will desert the team for generations if you do something they really don't like, and they'll carry that grudge as far as they possibly can. They won't pay for their 10 year old kid's trip to a game when his (or her) little league team goes. They'll drop their cable/satellite subscriptions even if it means they won't have *hit to watch. I run into a handful of folks older than me (well into their 60s and older, a couple who used to take those little league teams on those trips) that not only won't go to the park, but haven't watched a game on TV because they blame Glavine for the strike years ago.

It's probably safe to assume that there will be a huge chunk of the fanbase that not only won't return to the park for a long time if Freddie's traded or not re-signed, they'll ACTIVELY start groups opposing the Braves/Go Fund Me pages to try to hit the organization financially/etc. now that we've reached the social media Nirvana we're dealing with.

If Freeman is traded that’s AA’s decision. If he signs somewhere else that’s something he chose to do. All about optics and spin.

Also Freeman is not the next coming of Chipper. He’d be lucky to end his career being as valuable as Druw. Acuña is this team’s superstar.

To the fanbase he's been the next coming of Chipper.

Name ONE player who has been as open about his desire to remain a Brave for his entire career since Chipper began his later years. Now name one that also has an NL MVP in his trophy case. Add to that one that was the unquestioned team leader on the field, in the clubhouse, and in the media.

I'll save you some time - you can't.

Here's your optics and spin FWIW - Chipper was the good old southern white boy while Druw' was a superstar with dark skin from an island that most people watching the Braves every night couldn't find on a map. Who's team was it? Freddie's the white kid who ingratiated himself, became Chipper's best friend, and adopted Atlanta as home while Acuna is a superstar with dark skin from an island that most people watching the Braves every night can't find on a map..

It's unbelievably unfortunate that things are that way in the south in the 21st century, but it is what it is.

Acuña isn’t from an island.
