Can we try and pry Bumgarner from the D-Backs and make them pay half his salary.

They aren't going anywhere in the near future and Bumgarner would be nice to have at 50% of his price to replace Smyly assuming Soroka isn't ready.

You have to imagine that we will not see Soroka at all next season. Back to back achillies being torn is a very ominous sign.

3 years left on it, cant see AA deal for that contract.

This is one of those posts where you deserve to catch all the flack that gets unloaded on you.

Trading for Bumgarner actually would be stupid.

Why wouldn't we trade for one of the better pitchers the last decade that is still 32 years old? 2020 wasn't the reality. Bumgarner is pitching again like at worst a middle of the rotation starter.

You can find middle of the road starters in free agency every year for less than 20 mil a year.

D-Backs would have to pay some of his salary of course. Nobody wants all of that.

Let’s play this game. We ask for Madison and 25 million. Basically 10/10/5 off each remaining year. What are you giving up to get that package. He will be a 2 win pitcher this year. Do you have to value him as that going forward?

I think you can peg him for a 1-2 war for the next 3 years.

So anywhere from 30-60 million value.

Lets say in your scenario we get 25M (I don't think we need to ask that much). Thats 26M (51-25) so he is either at his right value or you throw in a 40-45FV prospect? I'd only ask to 14-19 back so we give up less. We have the money.

I think its worth it. He would be dependable middle of the rotation starter to complement our guys who are better than that.

Makes a bunch of sense to me.

Because he's not really very good any more and is owed a lot of money for multiple years and equal or better options can be had for less money and commitment?

Bumgarner if AZ covers the contract so he’s a ~3/30 commitment, is a decent fit.

He’s a bad contract, not a bad pitcher.

I don't even know why they would have to eat that much. We should have significant cap flexibility the next there years. I'm looking at this as mostly a salary dump for the D-Backs and we get a middle of the rotation starter.

If he doesn't want to leave his ranch thats one thing. The man has accomplished almost anything an athlete would want so him staying put where his family is happy makes a to of sense.

He's somewhere between a 4 and 4.5 ERA guy if you just discard last year's disaster entirely. And he's declining with attendant health concerns.

Why would you want to pay him a lot of money?
