2022 Spring Training Thread

Hopefully he will redeem some of his value this year.

Too early to give up on him, but he needs to have a good year.

Elder seems to be a horse. Braves let him throw last year. He seems like he has a good shot to give you 5-6 innings and 4-5 runs now. That is a solid 5th starter. No reason to save him, he's older w/o elite stuff. Pitch him while he has it. Save Strider and Muller some and see if they can put it all together given their upside.

Waters can hit from a hit tool perspective. And he has power. The consistent criticism is he doesn't have an approach. So spring training doesn't mean anything. When a pitcher is trying to sequence and get him out, that is the issue. In spring the guy is just working on fastball placement or change up grip.

So what you're saying is after Waters hits 10 HRs this spring off warm up fastballs, trade him to the Rockies?

Braves they are playing Drew Waters because they see some kind of value. The experts here have more knowledge that Braves scouts.

Waters has value. He looks to be good defensively and can play all 3 outfield positions. He also has excellent speed. ZiPS has him at almost 1 WAR this year.

The hope was Waters would become a star. That's still possible if he sees an uncommon improvement in his ability to make contact. He's got the tools but betting on that improvement isn't usually a good plan.

But there's a lot of room between a star player and a useless player. There's some value there. How much there ends up being we'll have to see.

They are playing him b/c he has the time to be on the 40 man or else be subject to rule 5. On the 40 man so in spring training.

If he played CF this year, I think he would be a 1 WAR guy. He'd play well enough at CF and he would hit some. But you are likely looking at early Austin Riley 290-300 OBP while starting his clock.

Question is, what will it take to get him to develop a plan and stick to it? Hitting first pitch fastball proves nothing.

If we had the pitcher batting I could maybe talk myself into letting him start at CF and hit 8th. Maybe being consistently pitched around to get to the pitcher would help him on approach. But he's got to go the minors and show a 350 OBP or better with some pop.

They are playing him in the scrub half of the lineup for the same reason they are playing Demeritte and Goins. Or do you also think those guys have some sort of value we can't understand?

You Waters supporters have interesting takes on him. i believe I've seen him more than most and every thing the scouts say or have said has been close to right. I've seen it with Jordan Schafer and I've seen it with Waters....approach....indecisive pitch recognition. Not a hater, but one spring homer doesn't equate to him being a reborn prospect.

You Water's supporters? Aren't we all water's supporters?

With Atlanta's Olson deal and Riley's success in 2021, there are examples now of players that developed an approach. These two can possibly be a resource for Waters.

My memory of Schaffer is he was exceptionally cocky and thought his talent was enough to get him to the HOF. I'm not saying he didn't work at it. The approach was just never there.

Besides, with Pache gone, Water's bat doesn't need to be as good in CF as was necessary when he was projected in LF.

He doesn't need to be a superstar. Just serviceable in CF and replace Duvall when he falls back to earth this year.

Never forget Schafe's opening night homer in Washington. Also remember him throwing someone out. What hype.
