2022 Spring Training Thread

Thought watching Jansen throwing 88 isn't awesome right now.

I really wouldn’t put stock into their gun right now. They had Anderson sitting 86-88 and the changeup in the 79-80 range. They also had Fried sitting 90-91 the other day but there were multiple reports that he was touching 96 in the same start.

I rarely say things like this as always hate the "in shape" BS, but Ozuna really does look noticeably more fit. Seems like he is in great shape.

In 2020, Ozuna came to camp a little fat and struggled. His wife told him that he needed to get in shape and during the gap, he did get in shape and look how amazing he was during the season.
In 2021, Ozuna came to camp a little our of shape and started off struggling, then got hurt, etc, etc.
In 2022, Ozuna came to camp in good shape, lets hope 2020 is the model, NOT 2021.

The realization that this may be the worst defensive OF in non-Philly baseball...

I noticed the Cubs are shifting Heyward to CF. If the Cubs would eat half his salary, he might be a workable option in CF. He probably wouldn't hurt the offense to badly now that the DH is in place. Platoon in LF, Heyward in CF and Acuna in RF.

There is shortage of good CF's in baseball right now. AA will have to get creative to fix the CF problem.

At this point Duvall is as good of a defender if not better than Heyward. And I don't think there is a CF problem. Duvall is very adequate out there. As is Acuna. Once everyone is back the only bad defensive spot on the field will be LF.

In my opinion, with advanced metrics and analytics, defensive positioning pretty much negates the need for what we used to consider a "center fielder". Just look at what the Dodgers have been doing. They will pretty much stick just about anybody out there.

Afraid I disagree.

As thewupk mentions, Duvall has proven "capable" if not better. He's not going to win a Gold Glove at the position, but playing him there is a *elluva lot less nerve-racking than having Freeman at 3B or Gattis in LF. You'd PREFER not to have to have Acuna slide back over there, but that's always an option if you need it - sure there's more running involved, but it's not like the chance he blows his knee out again multiplies exponentially if he's in CF instead of RF.

I honestly believe they're higher on Waters than many posters are and/or believe Harris is closer to ready than many of us think or Pache wouldn't have been dealt - his prospect shine had faded so far that replacing him with other pieces (substituting Waters and potentially upgrading the pitching return with more highly thought of arms for instance) wouldn't have kept the Olson deal from coming together.

Notice how Harris is still in big league camp? They REALLY seem to be giving him a look for the future.

I have noticed that and it is interesting that nobody is talking about it. Maybe because they are serious about evaluating instead of simply pumping up his value. I think they believe he is close to ready. Look for him to be assigned to AA and they are planning for him to be the next callup if there is a serious injury or it is just not working in CF. I expect to see him by July.
