2022 Spring Training Thread

Anyone watch that half inning from Tonkin? Looked good enough for me to look him up. Appeared in 121 games for the Twins between 2013-2017 with pedestrian numbers that seemingly got worse every year. Gave up 25 homers in 141 innings, but has some good spin rates and had a K rate that hovered around 25%. He went to Japan after that, and then to the Long Island Ducks where he had a 0.34 ERA in 21 appearances which was enough to get a contract from Arizona before being released during the pandemic. He went back to Long Island last year and once again posted a 0.53 ERA in 17 innings.

Anyways- I thought he looked pretty solid in that half inning. Was throwing 96, struck out a pair and got some ugly swings. Feels like a Matzek type of lottery ticket that will probably amount to nothing, but love taking free fliers on guys like that.

More likely the next Ian Thomas. That's how it tends to go with lottery tickets. But you never know. There was another guy (I want to say Hoyt) we signed out of high school. Not high school student. He was teaching in high school.

James Hoyt?

He was part of the Gattis trade.

Wright facing a bunch of regulars.

We have so many options for the final two spots.

I hope Ynoa/Wright are the first guys and let Davidson be the long reliever (Guy who backs up Ynoa/Wright for shorter starts). I think Muller is too talented for this role and should be in AAA starting every fifth day

I think we have to throw Wright and Newk out there first. maybe keep Yona in AAA to build innings.. soon as one of those sputter, bring up Yona. This has to be the last year for those two, so we have to give them a shot out the gate.

For me Ynoa's performance last year locks him in.

Lots of stuff on the ground for Wright though some were hard hit.

Some sloppy control in that third inning.

Just need to give this kid 15 starts to see what he can do.

The line looks fine, but I didn't see much from Wright that looked impressive or different from previous years.

think I would pull my hair out with 15 wright starts and I am a wright fan. Dude just can't command hit pitches.

Yeah - There is no way anyone can feel good about a positive outcome but the stuff is there and we have seen glimpses.

Its time. We spent the #4 overall pick on him. At some point you just have to throw him in the deep end to get the final evaluation. There is nothing in AAA left to do.

I'm not sure he can turn a line up over. Seems more mental than anything else.

I'd like to see if he can be stud multi inning RP.
