Depends if they're able to re-sign Castillo but on the surface that's a ****ing insane package for a guy with 1.5 years of control. On paper, we gave up less for Olson lol.
 
I think we are going to see more of these “overpays” as the supply of sellers decreases to go along with an increase in the supply of buyers due to new playoff format.
 
Really off the wall thought, but it's not inconceivable that Alex' deadline plan has been to stand pat the entire time IF they feel like what has been playing out on the farm isn't a mirage. Assume for a minute that the goal is to find a way to keep the entire group together until the end of Ozzie's deal (leaving you a chance to land a huge return for Acuna with a year left on his).

1.) You extend Dansby this winter for 5/$100 million. Takes him through age 33 and locks down the MI through 2027.

2.) Morton's option is picked up and he's your #3 next season behind Fried and Wright. Even with an uneven regular season performance, he's exactly the type of veteran SP you want in a playoff series - if he's facing the opposition's #3 you've definitely got the edge. This gives you another year for Strider to continue trying to develop a third pitch, Anderson to try to get things back together, and Muller/Tarnok/Shuster to develop. Smith-Shawver and Schwellenbach could be on the fast-track at that point, and you'll be closer to having a feel for whether you struck gold with any of the arms drafted this year.

3.) Grissom goes to winter ball (or spends time here) learning to play LF. He begins next season there in Mississippi or Gwinnett with the understanding that he's coming up when he forces his way into the lineup or when the first injury happens. Ozuna and Rosario can hold it down out there to start the year, and you can make a play to pick up Drury or even bring Duvall back on a reasonable deal as placeholders.

4.) You go to Fried and offer him the Musgrove/Gausman/Ray extension (5/!00-110 million) in midseason of next year. That would take him through the end of Acuna's deal and his age 34 season. Morton's money will be off the books at that point.


That "only" leaves you Riley's first two free-agent years to get creative with to keep the entire core together through the end of Ozzie's deal in 2027. You will have Ozuna and d'Arnaud off the books and will have replaced them and Rosario with Contreras, Grissom, and Malloy (if he continues to make strides).

Off the wall for sure, but not all that inconceivable when you think about it - and it would mean the only player you'd be committed to that gets to age 35 would be Olson (last guaranteed year of his deal).

While true, Freeman was locked in on a below market contract for 6 more years already. So it made at least some sense to keep him. Also HH kept suggesting we trade Freeman even after we started becoming competitive again, which was dumb.
 
Interesting how quiet this trade season has been so far. I know AA always plays things close to the chest, but you usually hear our name mentioned in various trades....I'm sure he is working heavily behind the scenes.

I don’t expect much of anything till Monday when we have an off day. We know the usual suspects like Happ and Drury. Happ checks off a lot of boxes for us and is controllable next year so he’d be the perfect fit imo.
 
Teheran was the one guy we didn't trade that we clearly should have. I'm guessing we got some offers, but not what we were hoping for. Still, something would have been better than the nothing we ended up getting for him.

Yep, that's the one guy we missed not selling high on. Reds getting that kinda haul for Castillo is impressive though, good for them.

The Mariners could have probably got Otahni for that package. For 1.5 years that’s crazy.

The Braves are looking for outfield help, per source. A reunion with Joc Pederson (on concussion IL) could make sense, but the Giants are 4 games out of a Wild Card and haven’t decided to sell. A rival exec believes SF is “ready to sell” after losing 8 of 9 games since the break.

Problem is Joc overlaps with Rosario and Harris too much to be a significant upgrade.

I think the OF addition needs to be either a legit everyday guy, or someone who can platoon with Rosario/Harris. Essentially they need what everyone mistakenly thought Duvall was.
 
We need a righty bat for the outfield, i wouldnt be mad at Joc though.
 
Wonder if the angels will sell Taylor ward? RHH on a cheap 1-year deal. He and Joey wendle are my wish list
