Official official offseason thread

Unless we can find a trade where we can just move our excess pitching and get an impactful player back, Conforto seems like the smart move for LF.

I think I’d rather keep our few position prospects and sign Conforto than overpay for someone like Reynolds.

If he didn't, he's insinuated it strongly

There is a huge difference between less money and still banking over 300 million and taking some kind of hometown discount the Braves were likely throwing out there.

Once players hit FA they almost always max out their earnings or come close.

People said that about the Hayward contact too. Turned out it was still a terrible contract.

Heyward was a terrible hitter propped up by good OF D. Turner is a very good hitter.

It’s still a very long deal, way too long. But from the Phils side, they can figure 35mm/year first 6 years them 17-18 or so for the last 5.

Well you're posting about one that didn't. And this is point a lot here have made that players sometimes take less to be where they wanna be. Hell, degrom probably coulda got a counter offer from Mets for more money, but he didn't.

Apparently the offer from padres was still more adjusted for taxes

Keep forgetting about conforto. I think I'm with you... just sign him over trade for Reynolds

i’m sure Turner came close to maxing it out, so your first statement is just wrong.

yes sometimes players take slightly less to go somewhere; they rarely if ever take massive “hometown discounts” to go somewhere.

So on the clearance aisle at SS, we have him iglesias and andrus.

Last year's slash line...
Iglesias .292/.328/.380
Andrus .249/.303/.404

Fangraphs def value for last season...
JI 5.1
EA 6.1

Steamer for 2023...
JI 1.5
EA. 1.9

Do you bite on one of these to pair with Arcia?

You state "I'm sure", and use that as fact to say I'm wrong haha

"Matt Gelb of the Athletic reports the Padres made an offer which topped the one Turner accepted from Philadelphia. Specifics of the proposal aren’t clear, but Gelb adds the gap was wide enough San Diego’s offer would’ve translated into more money even after adjusting for California’s higher state income tax rate than Pennsylvania’s."

ETA... and on degrom, he didn't even let the Mets attempt to match or exceed rangers' offer

You don't consider $300 million maxing out your earnings?

When people on this forum talk about players like Trea or deGrom taking less to play for the Braves it's generally by a significant amount. Like 3/100 for Trea or something ridiculous. That was never going to happen just because he grew up watching the Braves. Trea likely valued playing on the east coast and with his buddy Harper again. So he may have taken a lesser pay day to do that. But 300 million is a far cry from what the Braves were likely offering and that's the point.

You are not completely wrong. But this wasn’t a hometown discount since Texas wasn’t hometown. He didn’t jump at Braves offer whatever that was either. But he did take a discount to play somewhere other than at least 2 cities.

I think players will take less to NOT play somewhere more so than take less just to play in one city. That is the statement cheff is making.

When Charlie Morton signed for 20 million coming off 6.0 fWAR and 4.5 fWAR his last 2 full seasons, did he maximize his earnings?

2020 does matter especially for a pitcher at Morton's age. You just can't discount how he performed then. And also he reportedly was thinking of retiring if he didn't sign where he wanted. But please look for more examples of players on the open market who take deep discounts of over 100 million in guaranteed dollars to sign for a hometown team.

0.9 fWAR in 9 starts is 3.0 fWAR extrapolated over 30 starts

ETA... maybe not "open market", but look at albies and Acuna vs what tatis and jrod got.
