Minor League Thread

50...this is very advanced for him. I'd love to see him gain more consistency with his secondary pitches but they are good right now. He's a bulldog too. Love his confidence....I'm excited for him. I hope he experiences adversity and adjusts. He's the real number one in this system.

Hell, the way we’ve been doing things lately around here…..he will be in ATL by July and have a signed ten year extension by September.

In all seriousness, love to see them give him a season in our big league bullpen and then if he isn’t a clear closer, turn him loose on MiLB to turn into a TOR Ace

No doubt he's highly thought of..but THAT...is a bit much sir. 😂😂. And now it's gonna happen.

AJ has a ton of potential. I’ve watched him pitch and if he gets his control settled down he could be Strider 2.0 with a few MPH slower on the fastball.

So many intriguing arms in Augusta. Another one from last year’s draft class - 13th rounder Cedric De Grandpre. He’ll be 21 all season, pitched last year at JUCO powerhouse Chipola. He had another good start Tuesday night.

His line this season: 15.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R/ER, 4 BB, 22 K.

Some really exciting arms in that 2022 draft class between Murphy, Ritchie, Keller and de Grandpre. Then add in Phillips and Burkhalter recovering from TJ. Plus we gave Adam Maier over $1 million in the eighth round, and he should be back on the mound this season at some point.

Lot of interesting arms in that class, hope some of them can pan out.

21 and already a Grandpre?

They went a little over $100,000 over slot to sign him as a post-Round 10 draftee. Braves have done pretty well with that strategy.

Another Augusta arm, Jared Johnson (coming back after injury) hit 99 the other night. Post-Round 10 kid from 2019 out of an Alabama high school that the Braves went over slot to sign. He learns to throw strikes consistently and there may be something there as well.

All these arms coming up probably assures Fried wont be back smh. Not even talking about Ritchie or Murphy who were the top 2 picks last year.

Another good outing for Seth Keller today - and he finally gave up his first run of the season. 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER/R, 0 BB, 2 K. 7 ground outs, 3 fly outs.

On the season, he's at: 15 IP, 9 H, 1 ER/R, 2 BB, 11 K.

I've watched a few of his starts and don't see a ton of swing and miss stuff, but he's throwing a fastball 90-92mph, slider and changeup. And he actually throws all three pretty well for strikes.

Continuing our trend of interesting arms in Augusta. Jhoncarlos Lara threw well today after Keller - 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K. Two of the three walks came in his last inning of work when he was very clearly getting tired. He's a 6-3, 190 RHP and only 20 years old and pitched in the DSL last season, so a pretty big jump for him to skip the complex league.

On the season, he has 11.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7 BB, 18 K. .172 batting average against him.

Really early to take much out of his performance, but looks like yet another Augusta arm to keep an eye on.

Am loving all these potential arms all of a sudden - thanks for the updates guys - please keep ‘em coming !

I really thought the hitters in Augusta would look better than they have. Small sample size and all, but when you've only got three guys in the line-up today with OPS > .700 and your top international signing from two years ago is striking out 40% of the time, it's pretty ugly. McCabe should do better as the season progresses and Workinger piques my interest a bit, but that's not much of a line-up.

While I agree about Ambioris, I don't understand why they pushed him to A outside of his advanced feel for fielding the ball. He's good at it. His bat seems to be a year early for A ball, i.e. meaning we've seen Backstrom (as an example) struggle from gcl forward. I'd have rather they start Ambioris in short season first. Of course they could still send him there when the season starts, but I hate that yo-yo mechanism although it's warranted. (He also missed a lot of development due to thoracic syndrome surgery if I'm not mistaken).

If you haven't seen Tavarez, it's easy to look at his box score and say he's awful. I will tell you that they are working and reworking his set up and plane to the ball. He has quick wrists and now he is more relaxed in his setup than when I initially saw him with a rhythm type wave in his bat. He hit a 400ft triple which is indicative of the lift he's beginning to get(when he connects). It's ugly. I can't sugar coat that at 40% strike out rate, but I don't see him as that with more instruction. He has quick enough actions to the ball. When he misses though...ugh..it's like he guesses from AB to AB. Confidence will fix that to an extent but I hope patience pays off.

The arms to this point are intriguing and I didn't expect less honestly. There are 7 good pitchers I can name right now that could be good contributors down the road. Pretty exciting as far as pitching goes.

The player development staff seems to guess right when promoting pitchers, but have a much harder time gauging hitters. Harris and Grissom (to an extent) dispel that, but I look at Conley struggling along with a lot of guys on both the Rome and Augusta rosters having similar struggles and I wonder if the initial scouting is bad or if the instruction is a bit off. Part of it lack of depth in the system and part of it trying to figure out individual player ceilings, but the K-numbers for all our minor teams are pretty bad.

Great thought. I'm also thinking the international signings of Juan Bito, Diego Benitez and eventually....hopefully... Jose Perdomo perhaps necessitated some aggressive promotions. Curious note about Tavarez...he was noted as a bat first SS not the other way around. But he's been infinitely more impressive in the field.

Glod too could be interesting

Yeah..I didn't forget him. I was mostly wondering about ambioris though and why they were aggressive. Remember he also was in a mlb spring game damn near a few months after signing if I recall right. He struck out but looked the part. Lol.

To your point Glod is very intriguing. He's got some tools my all accounts. I love the story on Diego so I'm hoping he's in GCL so I can see him.

I don't know if it's that big a problem in the whole scheme of things, but the Braves didn't field a Dominican Summer League team in 2021, so Tavarez first professional action came in 2022 in the Florida Complex League. The Braves' international sanctions on top of COVID and their decision to spend almost all of their 2020 allotment on Tavarez really was a gut punch to the depth of the system. That continues to show up.
