Trade deadline thread

Lynn would be a good move for the Rays. I think they can fix his HR problem.

Also, I'm trying to temper my recent frustrations with the team. There's no need to push too hard, we're stacked. We're just in a rut.

As Cheff said in the GDT last night, I believe our biggest need at this point is a starting pitcher. Not a Jake Odorizzi type either. Going into the playoffs last year, Fried was sick and Strider was hurt. Morton is obviously not the playoff ace he used to be. Adding a Giolito or Snell would be a huge boost.

I totally agree, though it sounds like Snell [and Hader] are no longer on the market.
 
I do agree with cheff though that the rotation is our biggest need. If we have 1 of our SP go down again right before the playoffs we are sunk just like last year. Gio would be a huge boost to this team. I love Shawver but if he could be part of a package to get us Cease I’d be all over it.
 
The Angels GM is not likely to be around much longer if the Angels aren't winning. Angels are close enough that it isn't crazy to try and go for it.


And maybe it's just me, but the package they gave up for Giolito/Lopez seems pretty light.

Crazy? No. Dumb? Yes.

The GM might not be around long if he doesn't win but if he keeps Ohtani, they don't win the series, and Ohtani leaves in the offseason, he's a lock to get fired.

If Ohtani leaves, the Angels are likely to be sucky next year anyways. Whatever prospects they might get back for him aren't likely to change to the outcome for the 2024 season. And after 4 straight seasons of sub .500 baseball, 3 of which with 2 transcendent superstars, he would absolutely be fired.

So this is absolutely a move in an attempt to save his job. I don't know how you can characterize it as dumb. He isn't gonna be around for the rebuild anyways.

Quero is the Angels' #2 prospect and #65 on MLB's Top 100. He's a 20-year-old Cuban defector playing in AA so he's moving along rapidly. There was a lot of buzz around Bush (Angels #3 prospect) when he was drafted in the 2nd round in 2021. He's a pitchability guy and there's always a question about how that translates without raw staff. Just because these guys are #2 and #3 in the Angels' system doesn't necessarily mean they are great. I don't know much about what other prospects are in the Angels' system. Overall, I think it's a decent return, but certainly not eye-popping.

I know Quero is rated fairly high, but he seems to be having a mediocre year overall. Great year in 22 obviously but I'm not quite sure why he's continuing climb even further up prospect lists considering his 23 production.

Of course, I'm also very wary on catching prospects in general.
 
Angels probably figure this is their best shot to make the playoffs. Making the playoffs and going on a run, like any team can do as we saw last year with the Phillies, is probably their best shot at convincing Shohei to stay. He’s probably leaving either way, but maybe some buzz will give them a shot.
