2023 Misc Braves Talk

Yeah, he’s been good. Other than him it seems everyone who was touted as an obvious upgrade has not been good at all. Lorenzen had the no-hitter but has been terrible since.

Sucks for the Rangers. They went all in and a good chance they won't even make the playoffs.

With the offense locked up for several years I think AA will really focus hard on pitching this offseason. He’ll grab another top starter like Cease knowing that Fried is gone in a year and he’ll grab another elite bullpen arm like Hader.

If AA is going to focus hard on pitching this offseason because of Fried's pending departure, how about we focus on....Fried?

this team needs a better pen next year. 5 elite pen arms will win in the playoffs.. even with average starting pitching. If the Braves fail this postseason, I bet the pen will be the blame. Unfortunately, we will have to count on guys like Lee/JJ/Hand/Johnson/yates and not one of those guys gives me confidence they can give the Braves a clean inning 80% of the time.

What exactly from Johnson, JJ, or Lee doesn't give you confidence? Johnson has without a doubt been out best reliever since he got here. JJ has an ERA of 2.01 since June 1st. Lee obviously has been hurt, but he's been good when healthy and lefties not named Nolan Gorman look silly against him.

Even Yates has been pretty great, even though he walks the world.

JJ has been bitten by the home run bug of late
Lee is unknown with shoulder issues and hasn't looked great even in his rehab stints
Peirced Johnson I do like and I think is going to slot in behind Minter/Riggy
Yates walks the world and that will bite him, like it has before.

Justin Toscano dropped a good piece on Kyle Wright in today's AJC newsletter: https://newsletters.ajc.com/latest/...Y5*MTY5NDE4Mzk2OS4xLjAuMTY5NDE4Mzk2OS4wLjAuMA..

Here's a nice bit from Wright: "We identified a ton of inefficiencies that I had in my delivery, and that was ultimately contributing to the shoulder (pain). I think I was able to kind of get away with it for so long. One, I'm a pretty good athlete, I'm pretty strong. When you pitch in the minor leagues, you usually have more days off, it's less stress. Last year was my first full year (in the majors). You're posting pretty consistently every fifth day, it's much higher stress. So I think it just kind of finally caught up to me."

It sounds like he may have gotten away with it... at least for now.

Verlander has been his usual self. Scherzer has been good too, though he got lit up his last start.

BSOML but in September

I never understood Soroka's change. His health issues has nothing to do with his mechanics. They were fluke ankle injuries.

nope I don't either.. like an analytic nerd said he needs to increase his K numbers to be good and the Braves said, OK change his delivery... but they forgot he was good because hitters couldn't tell what pitch was what until it was 10 or less feet from them

Goldy said something interesting before the last game of the Cardinals series. He suggested that this Braves team might be "in the top five offenses of the last 100 years." I figured OPS+ might be pretty good shorthand for figuring out if he's right. Here's what I got:

1. 1927 Yankees 127
2. 2017 Astros 123
3. 2023 Braves 122
4. 1976 Reds 120
5. 2019 Astros 119
5. 1932 Yankees 119
7. 2019 Yankees 118
7. 2019 Twins 118
9. 2001 Mariners 117
10. 1998 Yankees 116
10. 2013 Red Sox 116
10. 1995 Indians 116

Braves are also trying to become the 1st team to slug over .500

And if you go by WRC+ the Braves and 27 Yankees are tied at 125.

This is as good as it gets.,

edit: Not sure how reliable you can even consider the baserunning numbers that Fangraphs uses for the Yankeese in the 20s. But the Braves are clearly a step up from that and are on pace to be #1 in offensive runs above average.

I was looking up the 2003 team, which "only" had a 112 OPS+. Which illustrates just how remarkable this group is -- the 2003 team clobbered the ever-loving hell out of the ball, lead the NL in most major offensive statistics, got 1.000+ OPS seasons out of Sheffield and Javy, an eight WAR season out of Giles, 153 games from Hall of Famer Chipper Jones...and they're 10 points beneath this year's team.

I was surprised at how good the two Astros teams were in this ranking, I mean, I knew they were good, but not historically good. Before I looked it up, I thought of the '27 Yankees (never saw them - I'm old, but not that old), '76 Reds, '95 Indians, '01 Mariners, '19 Twins....nevertheless, I feel confident saying this Braves team is the best offensive baseball team of my lifetime.

You basically need zero holes in the lineup to get into the top 10, along with having a few guys having MVP-caliber seasons. Having the DH makes this easier. The 2003 team had 3 black holes: SVOD, Fick, and the pitcher’s spot.

What’s really crazy is that this may be the best offense of all-time, but they likely aren’t going to even sniff 1000 runs scored.

FWIW, the Braves franchise has the most runs scored in a single season with 1,295.

Actually, it was 1,220 in 1894.

In 1894, when they also gave up 1002 runs.

On the other hand, props to the 1897 team for scoring 1,025 runs and only surrendering 665. That'll get you a cool 93-39-3 record.
