International News, Rumor and Signing Thread

If you stipulate qualified starters only you're limiting your sample size so much that 30 pitchers is actually pretty substantial. A 3.5 ERA would've put him at #33 out of 77 qualified pitchers last year, which isn't bad but is firmly middle of the road. Add to that the injury risk and...

2016 DRAFT Signing Tracker ... FINAL, JULY 15

Oh, for picks after 10 is it just the overslot amount that counts toward our total?

2016 DRAFT Signing Tracker ... FINAL, JULY 15

If I'm not mistaken it would actually be less than that, unless Neslony and Mooney decide to do us a solid and sign for free.

2016 DRAFT Signing Tracker ... FINAL, JULY 15

Yeah by my count the Cumberland signing puts them at $10,510,000.00 with the other bonuses listed on page 1, so that leaves them with $3,375,305.00 before they hit the 5% over mark.

Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

I feel like I'm missing something here - why would anyone trade a significant player for Profar? His current hot streak is fueled by a BABIP near .400 and he's not hitting for power or walking, and in his prior MLB work he was awful for about three times the number of games.

Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

I would hope we would get something similar to what the Phillies got for Ken Giles.

DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

I'm going to need a source that we were hoping he would drop to 40. Furthermore, who would you have drafted at 3/40? I don't see a combination I'd rather have than Anderson/Wentz.

DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

If we had been drafting at 10, we'd have had $3.2 million less in our signing pool and wouldn't have been able to afford Wentz. And getting Wentz isn't a small talent bump at 40; Sickels had him going top 15 or "possibly top 10" barring high signing demands.

DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

But the same logic holds for Wentz; if he were willing to sign for slot, he'd have been top 15., and writers have had Anderson going in the top 10 as recently as mid-May. I think you're seriously overrating the gap between Puk/Groome/Pint and Anderson/Wentz, and underrating the gap between...

ENOUGH. Call up Swanson, trade for a hitter...

Oh yeah, I absolutely agree that the team probably won't be awful next year and that we should start looking to build on it. I'm even in favor of trading Teheran if it brings us back a Benintendi or Bregman. I'm just not in favor of spending prospects to get Jay "-1.2 WAR since 2013" Bruce or...

ENOUGH. Call up Swanson, trade for a hitter...

Well, this is good evidence of why fans would not make good GMs. We suck this year, we're supposed to suck this year. It's still only May, so you need to either stop watching the team or figure out some way to watch that keeps you sane (I mainly tune in to watch our young pitchers). Panic...

    Vizcaino trade market?

Yeah I don't disagree that we'll have to stop the prospect stockpiling at some point, I just don't think that time is now. You've still got Swanson/Albies/Newcomb/Sims/Blair/Folty who haven't established themselves in the majors yet, but stand to see significant playing time by 2017. I'm fine...

    Vizcaino trade market?

Edit: Seems he did get Super Two status and has 3 years of arby. I stand corrected. Unless the FO seriously believes we will be in contention for a playoff spot in 2017 (and I mean actually believes, not just saying so for PR reasons), there is no reason to commit to winning in 2017...

    Vizcaino trade market?

That's true, but he's also a hard thrower with an injury history and a steroid suspension, with only 2 years of team control left after this season. I'd rather trade him for a nice haul that fills a need than hold out for an overpay and risk him losing most or all of his trade value.

    Catchers

I have a suspicion that a lot of this dropoff is due to the recent emphasis on pitch-framing when valuing catchers. I believe (although I might be mistaken), that the defensive component of fWAR does not take pitch framing ability into account. Assuming that's true, it could lead to a number...

    Julion Teheran over the Years

That can change as you age. As someone with older parents who moved 14 hours from home after college - it was awesome to be out on my own for a couple of years, until I realized my dad would be 70 before I got to see him more than a couple of times a year. Thinking about that lost time can...

    Julion Teheran over the Years

I've been in the 'don't deal him unless you get a haul' camp for a while, but I've begun to tip toward trading him. Obviously it all depends on what we actually get offered, but I think the combination of a weak SP market and his good pitching of late mean his value is probably close to its...

    Julion Teheran over the Years

My main worry with the Astros is that the big prospects I'd want from them - Reed and Bregman - are both at positions where the MLB club has holes. If Houston continues to struggle this year and Gattis and their 3B platoon haven't turned things around, I could easily see them deciding to stand...

    Julion Teheran over the Years

The scouting reports I see say Bregman has a good glove and arm, and that the main knock on his defense at SS is range. That sounds like it would probably play at 3B. He also evidently will be starting at 3B in the minors on Friday. Looking at his numbers, he is on fire right now; I know he...

    Fredi fired

If you don't think every official or representative of an organization is going to try to spin situations like this in the rosiest possible light, I don't know what to tell you. And no, I don't think he needs to be "held accountable" for saying he hoped to the team would be competitive before...
