They haven't been a very good baseball team for three months. They're beat up, scuffling, and have a big ol payroll. If they can move salary to reconfigure roster or get something helpful for the future that would be the best play. White flag time.

I don't think it's all that difficult. You can determine what it will take to sign guys before the draft and plan accordingly. There tends to be a little too much suspense as to whether guys are going to sign. When they went 20, the flyers and favor drafting largely has gone away.

I think selling would be better than buying. You have to be real secure in your job to contemplate it. Probably best all around to do nothing.

I don't think that punting a contention season by trading whatever rentals there are is impossible if it becomes clear that it isn't going to happen for this team. In fact, that's absolutely what a front office maximizing return for assets should do. The act of making that kind of decision...

Just my opinion but if your top three pitchers, your best player and your starting 2b all get injured, you probably shouldn't be trying too hard to overcome it.

In addition to Dodger prospect inflation I have to remember how at one point the Padres were supposedly a model rebuild for prospect accumulation and basically none of them from that specific crop panned out for them or anyone else. It's a weird thing.
