2015 June Draft Results Thread

I obviously know very little if anything about these players.. but this philosophy is just baffling to me

Everett - top HS Pitcher in Tennessee. One of the hardest throwers in the draft. 6'2", 220. Above-average power slider. Holds velocity deep into games. Has some feel for a changeup, but hasn't had to use it much. Vandy commitment. Sounds a lot like a Miller/Folty clone to me personally. IF (big if, of course) Roger could help him develop a 2-seamer like Miller appears to be mastering he might not need a third pitch.

Hooper - big velocity deep into games as well, but has a better changeup than slider. Sounds like he has the same problem Julio has with his slider - struggles to stay on top of it and it flattens out at times. 6'7", 230. UCLA commitment.

Both guys are big horses, both profiled as 1st rounders just about everywhere I've looked.

Same was said when they made all the trades this offseason.

The book is still out on that. We really won't know how it all shakes out for a couple of years. The early returns are promising though. But at some point we are going to need some legit hitting in the system.

Not saying you're wrong because I have no idea but how can we even gauge if this is a bad draft or not?

The reality is, IMO, we are not going to know if this is a good or bad draft for maybe three, four, five years down the road. Just like the drafts in the other sports. I'm not sweating the picks, for that reason. I do place trust in Clark, Bridges, Hart, and company.

So then its safe to say we don't know for a couple of years how this draft is shaping up but we can criticize them for it?

What if 2 of these prospects end up being TOR type arms? Sure, its unlikely but then this draft should be reviewed as an incredible success. Regardless of whether its pitching or hitting anytime you draft major leaguers you are doing a great job.

Of course we won't. All of this rapid reaction talk is absolutely silly. Other than the first couple of rounds its a complete crapshoot. We are criticizing these picks and we have never even heard of them much less seen them.

The front office does this for a living nad have a great reputation within the baseball community. Like you, I trust them. So far they have not let me down with the rebuild.

So we can never criticize anything.

We should use every pick we have on catchers. WHAT IF TWO OF THEM TURN OUT TO BE MIKE PIAZZA???

I have no idea. I'm no expert on the draft, but we aren't exactly highlighted and filling in the needs.

You don't draft for "needs", all 30 teams will tell you they're picking the best player available on THEIR board (in almost every instance) unless they're taking a couple guys they like a little bit here and there to save money to spend on tough signs later. Most of the players picked are AT LEAST one year away from becoming productive major leaguers even if everything falls right for them in their development.

Example - the Rockies drafted Dansby Swanson #1 and last time I checked they've got Troy Tulowitzki.

If the front office loves a bunch of catchers then I would trust their judgement until I have reason not to.

Sure if that were to happen that would be great. But the lack of hitting is disturbing to me.

Exactly.

I think I'm more confused about the development. If they want a lot of these guys to start, how are there going to be enough spots to start in our minor leagues? If they want these guys to relieve, then why are we taking so many relievers this early?

Its funny because 99% of these players will amount to nothing and yet we are arguing over who the picks are like we actually know anything about them.

This is the amateaur inernational signing.

BTW, this type of response is why everyone says you have an agenda.

uhhh... the entire offseason all I heard was were going to use our resources on the Cuban market and that was how we were going to fill the holes. First we thought we were going to trade upton/heyward for bats... then it was the cuban market. then it was the draft. now it's going to be the international market...

Sure if that were to happen that would be great. But the lack of hitting is disturbing to me.

Would I love to have a Bryce Harper in the system? Obviously. But I'm not about trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The Braves have clearly identified pitching as the strength of the draft at the spots they are picking. They know their pitching and hopefully some of these kids will turn into legit major leaguers.

I assure you that if we have a glut of pitching then it will be traded. There are teams already looking for pitching and if you catch a team at the right time looking to make a run you can clean up on their farm system. Maybe one year we will have a Jeff S to trade.
