Yes. The ideal scenario would be to have guys ready to step in come July and guys ready to trade. They saw that Harrel and Bud Norris could get them some good pieces. They want better pieces.

Could be. I'm not really in a hurry to see any of the young guys again are you? Wisler is cool and all but I'm content with him and Blair and Grant and elllis and Newcomb and Jenkins and Williams and company working on things in Gwinnett (I originally wrote Richmond)

I think the natural order of things will create opportunities in the rotation at some point during the year whether it be injury, ineffectiveness, or trade.

There's a chance they were trying to sign Volquez for one year and an option and the Marlins outbid them. I'm assuming they'll continue to pursue guys who will sign for a 1 year deal. It might just end up being a veteran on an MiLB deal to compete with the in-house options, but it seems they're aiming higher than that.

If we can unload Markakis, I'd try and deal for Cutch any day of the week. Provided we don't gut the system too bad of course. Can I dream of trading Markakis, trading for Sale and McCutchen, and signing Turner?

And before the trolls start, no I'm not saying there is any chance in hell all that will happen. I also don't think we'll be looking too hard at Cutch... Coppy doesn't seem to really care about upgrading the OF right now.

There is a team option for 2018. Not even returning to form but just being say worth 7 WAR over those two years gives you a surplus value of 28 million. That would be worth a pitcher in the 50-75 range on the top 100 list or a pitcher in 26-50 range. The problem is the Pirates are likely going to try and sell him as being a 5-6 WAR player.

Newcomb, and Demeritte to the Pirates for McCutchen. Inciarte and Vizcaino to the Cards for Reyes and Paul DeJong. Markakis and Sims to the Orioles for Chance Sisco and Mychal Givens.

CF- Smith, RF- McCuthcen (extend), 1B- Freeman, LF- Kemp (replaced by Peterson/Riley), C- Sisco/Flowers, 3B- Ruiz/Garcia (Garcia replaced next year by DeJong), SS- Swanson, 2B- Peterson/Rodriguez (replaced by Albies)

Bench - C- Sisco/Flowers, INF/OF- Peterson/Rodriguez, 3B- Ruiz/Garcia, INF/OF- d'Arnaud (replaced by Jace)

Rotation - Reyes, Teheran, Colon (replaced by Fried), Dickey, Collmenter/Wisler/Blair

Pen - Johnson, Krol, Givens, Cabrera, Paco, Ramirez, Minter, Roe/Withrow/Simmons

According to Rosenthal the starting point in a McCutchen deal with WAS is Victor Robles.
 
Would LOVE to see the Nats give up future assets for McCutchen.

The Pirates and Nationals have ramped up discussions about a trade that would send Andrew McCutchen to Washington, according to sources who have spoken with both teams. The Nationals, according to one exec, would like to make this deal today, because the ripple effect of trading for McCutchen would likely be a move to nontender shortstop Danny Espinosa before tomorrow's tender date. The Nationals have been looking for a center fielder. So if they can trade for McCutchen, he would play center, which would bounce Trea Turner to short and leave no spot for Espinosa. The Pirates are looking for controllable starting pitching. So names like Joe Ross and Reynaldo Lopez would fit that shopping list.

Which means it would put the Pirates as still selling Cutch on being that 5-6+ WAR player. Smart of them to do so but if you buy in at that then you are going to be overpaying imo.

Pirates need cost controlled pitching. If I were them I would be targeting guys like Joe Ross, Lucas Giolito, and Reynaldo Lopez from the Nats.

Maybe they will get Robles plus a pitcher. If so, trading Cutch is an absolute no-brainer for the Pirates.

If they could pull off Robles and Lopez that would be a steal for them. Hopefully the Nats go all in.
 
Let's assume Cutch rebounds (as will any team trading for him) and produces 8 WAR over the next 2 seasons at a cost of $28M. That represents $36M in surplus value.

The Pirates "win" the trade if the return includes any one of the guys being mentioned as the headliner.

That's what I'm banking on. Their farm system isn't all that impressive outside of the top four (Giolito, Robles, Lopez, Fedde). Hopefully they go for it, trade some of them and hurt their future for when we are ready to compete.
 
The Nationals make me so mad. They're a horrible ran franchise. They have so much talent and just consistenly falter. I laugh, but they're just my least favorite team in baseball.

the Nats success is a bit of luck too. They sucked at the right time to land two clear 1.1 players. they also were gifted Turner and Ross in the Myers trade. I fully expect them to have a few more years of being the class of the East and then fade to 3rd. I don't think Dusty will ever get them over the hump.
