2016 Presidential Debates Thread [2-13-'16 GOP South Carolina]

I think Trump did himself in tonight... but man he was funny

yeah...after a while everyone got used to it and said he's my boy cuz the Left is making fun of us and we got to stand up for ourselves

and the rest of it is history

y'all had him pegged from the start

the loyalty is mostly due to the Left picking on him and him driving the Left crazy...so he couldn't be all that bad

but he was and is

reminder... sturg33 did NOT vote for Trump 2016.

sturg33 enthusiastically voted for Trump in 2020.

Self-reflecting and course correcting is a function that seals software will not allow

I would agree with you, but I'm not sure what to believe. I didn't think he would make it his far. I really thought he was going to try to be presidential but he just was flat out Trump. I think there's a real problem in the pubs side that Trump will run as third party

weso had it right...in the 2016 cycle crazy won bigly in the Republican Party

and y'all still trying to dig out from the craziness except y'all have gotten so used to it and so dug into defending it that you've come to like it

that's how we come to the assertion today that very poorly chosen one was a geopolitical mastermind of the highest order who kept Putin at bay

I suppose you still are confident in your prediction that the GOP will not win in 2022 bc they are digging out of the Trump mess, right?

Donald Trump was the biggest loser to me tonight. Too much snipping at the other candidates and moderators. And he also danced around the questions a lot. Especially when he was asked about his resorts filing for bankruptcy. Biggest non-answer from anyone tonight. I look for him to drop in the polls after tonight.

in other words...a typical very poorly chosen one performance

but instead of tanking in the polls he rose...over and over

that kind of experience induces cognitive dissonance

different folks will react differently to that kind of experience

some get used to it and start defending and rationalizing it...even start describing it as some sort of "genius"

Full admission, I haven't been a fan of Trump. But, I was going to give him a chance in this debate and see how he did. All he did tonight was verify in my mind why I didn't consider him presidential. The one liners and tough talk will only go so far.

100% correct

nothing that has happened since that day changes this verdict in any way

funny how Trump got 9 million more votes the second time around

I suppose uncle Joe doesn't plan to answer my post 304

Yeah, we kinda all were in agreement we thought Rubio did very well. He can create some momentum I think with his background (as long as he doesn't overdo it), and youthful energy.

I think Carson isn't serious this year, but with some polish he could add something in a few years. I'd honestly like his voice somewhere in the gov't at some point though. Like I said earlier, probably the smartest guy on the stage by far he just lacks the polish that the other career politicians have. I'd look for Jeb to improve in the next debate, as I think he has some good views to offer and probably knew the Iraq question was coming and would have to knock his brothers moves.

I didn't like Walker at ALL.

Carly, Kasich, Rubio - I'm okay with any of them. Carson is a man of integrity, just not ready at this point.

interesting that back then some posters didn't think very poorly chosen one to be even worth assessing...he was out there somewhere beyond the pale

still is beyond the pale imo

but some got used to it and even came to love it and defend it

You are forgetting the context that they made voting a lot easier for people. Without that the winner of the election probably has 70-72 million votes. But if you wanna go that route Biden went from 65 million votes in 2012 and after only 1 term by Trump dementia Joe got 16 million more votes than the previous election he was on the ticket.

Fox News clearly wanted Trump to say outrageous things. They asked him tough but fair questions. Why would Fox News want Trump out of the race? He's ratings gold.

This gets at something very interesting that we sometimes forget. During the primaries it was CNN that gave very poorly chosen one all his oxygen. Fox has always been an organ of the GOP, which at the time of the primaries meant being anti-Trump.

Fox's take (and dare I say a few posters around here) changed once he became the head of the home team.

I think Ailes cares more about the ratings.

I personally don't think Trump is hurting the GOP right now. I think he's helping. 24 million folks watched that debate and many actually got to hear people like Kasich, Cruz, Rubio, etc. maybe for the first time.

But I also don't think the questions they asked Trump were unfair. Again, they asked tough questions about everyone. The front runner always gets the most questions. The thing about Trump is that there are a lot of questions that need asking.

good observations all around

I just dont understand how anyone doesn't see through Trump. He is the most transparently full of BS person I have ever seen. If someone just hates Demkcrats I understand. If someone is just on team Republican and will core for whowvwe has the R next to their name I understand. What I dont understand are the true believers who think he is some paragon of virtue who is perfect in every way. Does. Not. Compute. And then somehow that makes me a MSNBC watching liberal.

i've tried to offer a theory

if you are invested in the theory the Left is nuts (and there is a lot of nuttiness in the Left) what do you do when the Right (your side) goes on a massive nuttiness binge that far outstrips nuttiness on the Left. It induces a certain cognitive dissonance that will bring various reactions from different people. The worst reaction (and one we see on this boards) is go down biggest darkest rabbit hole with the rest of the nuts. You buy into it. Because the alternative is to become homeless (in a political sense). No one likes to be homeless. Especially when the home is still standing. It takes a lot to realize it is filled with termites and other vermin and walk away from it. And if your identity is deeply tied to this oppositional view of the Left being a menace and nutty and all that, then it is doubly hard to walk away.
