2016 Trade Deadline Rumors and Moves

If the Pads are chipping in a fair bit of cash, and we aren't giving up anything major I'm not sure why you'd have problems with it. I haven't been a big fan of the idea of Kemp, but he's worth a shot if we aren't giving up much.

If he costs anything more than Olivera straight-up, I'll pass personally - and he will.

Just Hearn and Rivero for Melancon, great deal for Washington.

I like this for PIT, but disappointed that the Nats didn't have to pay more in light of the Chapman deal. Nats did better than Cubs. Most important thing though . . . any trade WAS makes this year to acquire rentals for controllable talent is a win for the Braves.

This trade doesnt really hurt Washington that much going forward, still have alot of their top prospects to bring up or use in trades.

If Kemp hit the market right now as a FA he would likely get something like a 1 year deal for under $10M. The Padres would have to kick in something like $40M just to get a low level lottery ticket from the Braves.

What's interesting is if they include Norris and/or Solarte. All 3 of those players could probably get them an arm like Whalen after the surplus value of Solarte and Norris cancel out the negative value of Kemp.

One trade with the Padres could theoretically "fix" 3 positions for the Braves.

Kemp owed $75ish million from this point forward. It would present an avenue to move Olivera's full contract, and still get considerable cash from SD. Kemp is bad though, and almost 32 year olds with degenerative hips don't usually get un-bad.

Pads only owe him any 18 million per year, and reportedly would eat quite a bit of salary. If they'd take back Olivera and throw in some more cash, I think you'd have to really consider it. He is still a useful piece in offense.

This is the only way if do it. Take on Kemp so we can get their useful pieces.

Or.... take back Olivera and Markakis, saving the Braves about ?$46M? (not sure if numbers are accurate) against the amount owed to Kemp.

I would rather have the players, but interesting thought.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports the Padres are looking to deal Matt Kemp.

Everything must go. The Padres still aren't done selling even after trading away Andrew Cashner, Melvin Upton, James Shields, Fernando Rodney and Drew Pomeranz. Trading Kemp appears to be the team's next order of business and the Padres are willing to eat a large chunk of his salary to broker a deal. The 31-year-old has had a fine season, hitting .269 with 23 HR and 69 RBI. Rosenthal mentioned Atlanta as a possible fit. It looks like the only Padre safe from being traded is All-Star first baseman Wil Myers.

Kemp would immediately become our best hitter.

His OF defense is Manny-esque and literally the only thing he does well on offense is hit for power. He's 32 and hasn't been worth putting on the field since 2012. Even if the Padres pay $60 million of his remaining salary over the next three years, you're still stuck paying $5 million a year for a guy who is basically just a bench bat or a crappy DH at this point in his career.

Kemp has 20+ HR's and 63 RBI's or so, he can still hit.

Defense blah.

Why do people keep claiming average guys are better hitters than Freeman? It makes zero sense.

Trading for Kemp doesnt make sense unless you are taking on good prospects as well. Average hitter and possibly worst defender in game. And is older.

Kemp would not be the "best" hitter on the team, however, having a guy hit behind Freeman that has power from the right side would make the lineup better overall. Freeman would get better pitches to hit theoretically

Freeman has an .885 OPS and isn't terrible defensively at his position like Kemp. Kemp had a .755 OPS last year and will probably put up the same or worse this year. Plus given his hip issues he'll likely decline further next year and so on.
