2016 Trade Deadline Rumors and Moves

He was tried in left field already in past years and was terrible there too. Terrible range, bad DRS, etc. He is one of if not the worst DH type trying to play defense going right now.

I'd still rather have him than Olivera and he'd at least be a positive in the lineup. We are pretty solid everywhere else defensively

I think there is a decent chance of a small improvement there because of that, and also a decent chance he's only fairly below average defensively in LF rather than horrid like he is in RF. Not that I'd expect anything amazing, but he could be okay if that's the case. Worth giving it a shot if they are eating most the money and we aren't giving up anything of substance. I think it beats most of the alternatives I've seen. I'd much rather see Kemp than give Desmond/Cespedes 5 year deal or trade for someone like Braun and give up real talent.

Given that I'm pretty sure we will trade for or sign an OF, 3B, and C by the beginning of next season because of the new stadium, I'd rather we get those players without giving up our second rounder or major prospects that set back the rebuild.

Kemp has already shown that he's horrid in LF as well. It was in 2014 with the Dodgers and his DRS was -8 in only 369 innings, terrible range numbers and -40.3 UZR/150. I highly doubt he'll be better there now than before, he will probably be about same or worse as his decline continues.

Just did the math. The difference in total $ owed between Kemp and Olivera is $42m.

Does the 42 Million difference include the money the dodgers are giving the Padres for kemp?

I think dumping HO would be a great deal. I doubt HO will ever be more than dead money.

They would have to pay most of kemps salary to make sense. Ges got 3 more years

Can inciarte and mallex make up for kemp's struggles defensively?

Take on McCann and we might have a decent offense next season.

Albies

Swanson

FF

Kemp

McCann

3b -- platoon of Ruiz and Garcia?

Inciarte

Mallex

There would be a nice mix of speed and thump

I'd be fine with Kemp if the dollars even out some. I imagine we are going to have to pay him more than our current annual obligation to Olivera, but Kemp at least resembles a middle-of-the-order bat. I'm not kidding myself. He's on the down slope of his career, but at least he'd be better than some of the pin-arms we have swinging the bat right now.

I agree. If Kemp is only payed like a bench player or just a little more. Then sure I'd do that for Olivera. But I am not adding any good prospects in any deal for Kemp because he is high risk of further decline and dead money if so. Not to mention how terrible he is on defense. He's a DH in the outfield anywhere you put him. Hopefully we can move Markakis if this deal goes through as we don't need both corner spots lacking so much range and no arms too.

He has a near .800 OPS... That's not bench player level.

So it sounds like a Kemp/Olivera bad contract exchange is actually getting close

Yeah, I know on his SSS LF numbers are pretty bad. And odds are he sucks close to just as bad there, though his has been slightly less terrible this year in RF than usual. Like I said, I wouldn't expect anything amazing, but I'd much prefer this move than some others we could do given that I don't think we are ready to compete for real until mid 2018 or early 2019.

He had a .755 OPS last year and is hot right now so it's a little better. But I expect he'll end up about the same, which doesn't impress me much since so much of it is taken back with his defense.

In the most optimistic of projections, Kemp would be worth about 1 WAR per year over the last 3 years of this deal. Even in that optimistic scenario, the Braves would need to get money back in this deal (in additional to clearing Hector's $).
