2018 Offseason And Targets

Definitely doable. Whether or not AA is willing to commit that much to 2019 is the question.

"Some of the things we've explored are starting to move," Anthopoulos said. "There are a lot of things we'd like to do and a lot of things we'd like to get done. We just don't want to force a move. I know at times that can be tough for a fanbase. Everybody wants to see us make a splash with trades and signings. I get it. The one thing I know the fans care about is if that team is going to win on the field. I've been there. I've won the offseason before. I've made the big splashes. It does not always work. That is not always the best way to go about it. That doesn't mean we're not going to take opportunities to make the team better, and there's still opportunities out there."

"I expect us to add. I just don't know if that's one, two or three players," Anthopoulos said. "Depending on the free agent market, conversely, there's a trade market that goes along with that. Maybe this kicks into Spring Training. So, I'd say between now and Opening Day, I'm confident we'll have added a player."

I hate to say it but it sounds like Neck.

Not so sure it sounds so much like Markakis as it sounds like everybody else out there using the precious value charts. Nobody's arguing whether they're right or not, but why throw $23 million at Donaldson for a year if you're not willing to surround him with the other pieces necessary to win?

If you're not willing to go get those pieces - even if they required an overpay or two - giving that money to Josh was an incredibly stupid thing to do, no matter what he's worth on paper.

If you're still building for the "long run", *issing that money away on one year of Donaldson is every bit as stupid as the Reds' adding their bunch of rental players.

That's just not true. Its not a binary decision. You don't have to clearly build for the future or compete for this year. You can take care of the present while preserving the future and the Donaldson signing was clearly done with that thinking. It gives us a star caliber player for a competitive year while preserving a ton of future financial flexibility. You also don't have to piss away value in order to compete now. Maybe sometimes you do, but the Yankees are clearly playing for this year and yet they have gotten amazing value on every single deal they have made. The name of the game should always be to do everything you can to find trades that are good values while also helping your team. Maybe at some point you exhaust all of your options and have to pay slightly over market value, but if that happens it probably points to a failure somewhere in your approach. But you should never just overpay for the sake of getting a good player when other, better opportunities might exist.

If we had a choice of trading for a 3 win outfielder, but paying a 2.5 win price vs. a 4 win outfielder, but paying a 5 win price.... I'm taking the first deal every single time.

How exactly is spending on a 1 year deal mutually exclusive from building for the long run?

Intelli-Braves understand it’s a way to improve the team without potentially sinking the payroll long term.

Not sure which lists you’re looking at because I don’t bother with any others.

A 50 plus a pick in the 30s plus a filler is a clear overpay for 1 season Gray, especially for a team unlikely to contend in 2019. It is objectively a bad trade for the Reds.

The fact the Reds see a negotiation window as additional value tells me the Yankees are taking advantage of the dumbest team that wants Gray. The Yankees played this to perfection.

Yes I saw that. Which is why I questioned that he was a 50 FV prospect. I have not seen any other outlets give him that much praise.

I'm not really arguing whether or not it was a bad deal for Cincy. It certainly seems excessive for a pitcher with 1 year of control remaining and whom the Yankees clearly don't want. Unless he's a top shelf defender, I just don't get where the hype comes from for a 23 year old middle infielder without eye popping minor league numbers.

He's not quite a Top 100 prospect. The Reds have 5 of those. But he's generally considered to be the next best prospect after those five.

The Braves best prospect who is not Top 100 is probably Contreras. So he's probably the closest Braves comp in terms of value. Both are listed at FV 50, which actually covers a fairly wide range of players.

I know I would be reluctant to give up Contreras for Gray.

Contreras is 20 years old though and putting up similar numbers at the same levels Long did, but at a much younger age.

Long put up an OPS of .765 last season in AA at age 22.

Contreras put up an .823 last season in Low A at age 20.

I prefer Contreras too, but think he is the most comparable guy in our system to Long in terms of value.

If any of these happen alone, AA is not going to be my favorite person. If we add one of these guys AND JTR or someone like that, sure, but this is not great news.

May be. And I'm not saying I'd have made this trade either. But perhaps how much of an overpay is being exaggerated a bit. I just don't see much about Long that screams 50 FV level of praise. But again, I know very little of the Reds farm.

I 100% agree. If AA gets one of those 3 and nothing else then the offseason was a fail. And with as much money and trade capital he had he gets an F.

Contreras is more valuable because of positional scarcity. Long is a second baseman, the position where true second basemen live, failed ss go and long ML careers seem to happen.

Just saw a report the Dodgers are talking to the Pirates about Marte.

He was my preference to start the offseason. I agree that a LH bat is a better fit now, but I think still think Marte would be a good fit if available.
