2019 29 New York Yankees $26,000,000 8.118
2020 30 New York Yankees $26,000,000 May opt out of contract following 2020 season
2021 31 New York Yankees $29,000,000 Miami Marlins to pay $30m to New York Yankees if Stanton does not opt out following 2020 season.
2022 32 New York Yankees $29,000,000
2023 33 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2024 34 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2025 35 New York Yankees $32,000,000
2026 36 New York Yankees $29,000,000
2027 37 New York Yankees $25,000,000
2028 38 New York Yankees *$25,000,000 $25M Team Option, $10M Buyout.

So the Yankees owe Stanton 2/52 through age 30, or 9/240 through age 37 (assuming the 2028 option is not picked up). I find it highly unlikely Stanton walks away from 7/218 by opting out after his age 30 season.

He is probably projected to produce the following WAR values over the next 9 seasons: 4.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5 = 22 total, maybe a little less.

Considering the $/WAR value will be $11M+ by the early 2020s, the current Stanton contract represents almost exactly 0 surplus value...which is why the Marlins had to include $30M to make the trade happen.

In short, Stanton could probably be had for almost nothing if the new team takes on all of what the Yankees owe. I don't think it even resembles a viable option for the Braves.

If we could afford that deal why wouldn’t we just go get Harper?

I know you didn’t say we could, a question for the board.

That all depends on what kind of deal you could get with the Yankees. Would they pay most of Stant9n’s salary just so they can sign Harper? It’s a very big long shot and I’m not advocating for it. I just heard the talk on MLB and was just wondering what a deal would look like. BTW, if we could get Harper for 5 years instead of 10, it would be more likely that we would sign him.

kimbrel was older and making money, not peanuts.
BJ was awful and was making more than cano when you subtract what the Ms would be contributing. cano is actually useful.
diaz is coming off a better season than kimbrel by a good amount.

Rosenthal on MLB Network said the M's would do either with Diaz. Trade him straight up for prospects or with Cano. He also said he doesnt know how interested the Mets are in such a deal.

If the Braves are going to go after an elite BP arm, taking advantage of the Ms FO is certainly the preferred way to go about getting one. I’m generally against using even more resources for pitching now, but if a Paxton-level value can be had for Diaz it’s a no-brainer deal for AA to make.

I think Diaz would cost more than Paxton but if they can get him for a good package, thats something to consider.

Nightendale- Free agent center fielder A.J. Pollock is attracting plenty of interest, but he’s looking for close to Lorenzo Cain’s 5-year, $80 million deal with #Brewers in early talks with suitors.

I didn't mean the overall cost, I meant the value. Paxton was acquired for about 75% of his surplus value because the Ms overvalued nearly MLB ready arms. If the same type of value can be extracted from a Diaz trade it's a good move.
