Putting aside the total dollar amount for a minute, what's everyone's thoughts on the contract length that Harper and Machado will get? After watching teams get burned by the Pujols and ARod deals, I just find it unlikely that anyone is going to get a 10 year deal anymore. I realize those two are younger than Pujols and ARod when they got their mega deals, but still. My guess is that they'll get shorter, high AAV ones

I could maybe see Bryce get 10, but of the teams interested, i think only Philly would go to 10 years because they have money to burn.

But i agree i think Manny or both get 7-8 years with opt outs after 4 years at a higher APY/AAV.

lol...apparently on MLB Radio Frenchy said we're in on Harper

He actually didn't say we were "in on him" - it was one of those "we've all been told that they've got more money than they've spent, and from some reports I've read - significantly more money - so I'm not ready to rule it out" deals.

It wasn't a statement so much as wishful thinking in the event he signs a short deal with a high AAV for a couple years and goes back on the market before he turns 30.

He reads Bowman a lot.

I'll be surprised if Harper doesn't get 10 years. Pretty sure he already turned down 10/300 from the Nats.

Machado may be a different story. But I think he ultimately gets a 10 year deal as well. Likely from the Yankees. Both players will also have multiple buyouts.

Unless he decides to go shorter term at higher AAV...

Would you take 10 years at $300m or 5 years at $200m? The 5 year deal would be betting on himself to hit the market again with a chance to get another 4-5 year deal.

I know it sounds crazy and hard to believe but if Liberty Media has intentions of selling at all then Harper would be a really good selling point to a potential buyer. And like I said earlier, AA leaving the WM early to meet with Liberty execs in Colorado is not something I recall the past GMs doing.

New owners generally prefer less financial commitments on the books when they buy. Harper would subtract from the sale price not add to it.

Personally, I take the latter. I know it sounds insane, but I prefer the opportunity to make more, especially when you already have $200 mill in the bag. I'd LOVE to sign him on a 4-5 year deal.

This talk of Harper signing some short contract is completely naive.

Harper is going to get a long deal with 1-3 opt outs. He is going to get the chance to take a short deal by exercising an opt out, or stick with a huge long deal.

Dude has a career .257 BABIP. It's not like that is due to jump way up.

Good lord do you know how averaging works? When you've only played 3 full seasons, one full season below .240 is going to really drag the average down. His other two full seasons were .276 and .261.... a significant difference.

Yeah. You people quit talking on a message board when there's SO much more to talk about. You realize Texas Instruments is about to come out with a new calculator, right?!?!?

What? His quote was “I don’t care what anyone says, we are still in the running for Bryce Harper. A lot of people don’t know this but he loves Atlanta."

But keep on doing the clv

So confidently dumb...

Does Pache and Wilson for Peralta and Bradley still excite you?

I can't wait to bring that one up over and over.

That sounds like something a villain would say in a teen movie. You'd need to cast it right to make it funny, but it could work.

Wouldn't it make sense for the player for the shorter contract with the higher AAV though?

10 years / $300m with opt outs at 3/5/7 years....
5 years / $200m with opt out at 3 years

even if he were to opt out at 3 years, he still makes more money.
