2018 Offseason And Targets

I mean JD starting and Camargo to the bench does upgrade the roster but i agree i have a hard time thinking thats all we do this winter.

They'd be better but not sure how much. Need JTR or a top end outfielder not named Harper (Pollock, Peralta, etc)

JD is a major upgrade at 3b (assuming healthy). Camargo is a major upgrade to the bench. Adding Donaldson could possibly give us 3 of the best hitters in the east. C+ or D grade sounds like an irrational grade. I don't think we're done regardless

We're really not upgrading catcher as things stand now, and the outfield situation remains a question as does the pen/rotation.

But i agree i dont think those are the only two moves we'll make.

By definition, C is average.

Adding JD when they already have Camargo, bringing back Markakis, and downgrading to Mac at catcher when they had something like $40M in payroll available and a top farm system is a below average off season for a contending team.

The upgrade at 3B barely covers the downgrade at C and cOF...for $40M...

D+/C- is a below average grade.

with JD at third and Camargo on the bench, we stop giving ABs to guys like Flaherty, Adams and Tucker

And fewer ABs to Culberson, who is likely to regress

When you look at it that way it becomes clear signing JD was a very good move. The price was good too.

I have said all offseason give me Harper and Kimbrel and let's go to work. I get Donaldson but we didn't have a need at third. Riley is probably going to end up the next Jermaine Dye. I personally can't stand Harper but this is once in a lifetime opportunity like Maddux and Bonds were in 1993. Harper has 5-10 yrs left easy and would put us in the WS conversation easy.

It’s nice to dream big, but with the contract demands those two have, signing both is completely unrealistic.

Sure it was, but they also downgraded at C and cOF if they being back Markakis.

$40M and a boatload of prospects should have resulted in 5-6 wins of projected improvement this offseason. Any less is a below average effort.

I'd we can get realmuto, I'm fine with markakis. My preference is pollock though to let our farm guys progress 1 more year and see what we have

Getting Pollock on a bargain contract and trading for JTR for good value in addition to the JD contract would represent an A off season. Dumping Duvall and picking up a LHH 4th OFer would push it to an A+ for me.

Pollock + realmuto + markakis/cargo?

Its far more likely that AA is waiting for bargains, and those bargains won’t be available until the big dominos fall.

There was a small chance of getting Harper, but that pretty much went out the window when they gave JD $23M.

Could be trying to trade JT to free up some extra cash.....

I doubt it, but it's plausible if Olney is correct.

Well again, if the plan is to have Camargo play a lot of games in LF, then it likely would not be a downgrade, and potentially could be an upgrade at 2 starting positions.

That's a risky play if we go with that option though since someone will likely get hurt and miss a significant amount of time.

I think a LHH OF is a better fit for our roster with Duvall, Camargo, Culberson, and maybe Riley seeing some corner OF ABs already. Markakis is surely one of the 3, and CarGo is probably another in my view. As far the 3rd via the trade market, I'll guess someone along the lines of Nomar Mazara or Scott Schebler.
