2018 Offseason And Targets

We're obviously willing to sacrifice defense/framing for offense at catcher... could we perhaps see AA do this at ss with camargo over Swanson?

Depends on how Swanson does. But SS is one of the spots Camargo could a lot of PT. Corner outfield is another. And just about any other position if there is an injury. If Inciarte gets hurt, we'll see Acuna in center and Camargo playing a lot of corner outfield. Ditto if Donaldson or Albies gets hurt. Injuries happen and having Camargo around provides us with pretty good cover.

Really hope we give my boy, dansby more planned days off this season to try and keep that wrist healthy. I think a lot of his offensive woes were wrist related

I hate to be so negative, but I just get the feeling that we've made all the moves we're going to make. Signing Neck eliminates Zobrist, Peralta and Pollock. Most of the good relievers have signed already, with the notable exception of the best one. What FA starting pitchers are out there that would be upgrades? Keuchel maybe? I doubt Cleveland is going to trade Kluber at this point - they've already shed most of the payroll they've needed to. Idk what realistic options are out there. Hopefully I'm wrong

Agreed. I think more rest would help a lot of the guys. Injury for Dansby and fatigue for Albies, Neck and Freeman

Sure we could have dipped into our prospect pile. But I'd rather not unless the return is very good. Imagine if we had traded Albies last off-season.

This is a silly comparison.

Albies was a FV 60 position prospect no organization just emerging from a rebuild would trade.

All recent trade discussions revolve around prospects who are much less valuable than Albies, and a team that is clearly in contention.

Looking at available non-QO free agents, one roster spot that would be pretty easy to upgrade is the one slotted for Sam Freeman. Guys like Jake Diekman, Justin Wilson, Aaron Loup, and Oliver Perez all look like better match-up lefties to me.

The ONLY upgrade this off season.

So much this. I love Donaldson and he’s one of my favorite players in the league but if he has a bad injury then our season is pretty much shot bc we blew our wad on one guy. The ONLY way a Markakis resigning makes ANY sense is if we get one more big offensive piece.

If Donaldson gets hurt, we are better than last year if everybody else is healthy. McCann is a wash. O’Day is here. Viz and Gausman for the whole season, maybe a wash without Sanchez? Acuna for the whole season. Soroka and Gohara is back. All of the other kids have a year under their belts. We will see Riley soon if he’s not traded. I really believe there is another move or two coming. And, it would help if Harper and Machado doesn’t come to the East.

people losing sight of that because it came so early in the off-season

also if Camargo and Riley had already showed they can be decent outfielders there would be less angst about the outfield...i think we'll find out in spring training they can play there

From AJC article a couple of days ago.

Camargo spent the offseason on his outfield skills. He’s played just one major-league inning beyond the infield (in 2017), but lobbied the front office that he’d be comfortable expanding his duties. The Braves likely will add a clear starting corner outfielder before opening day, but Camargo as an occasional fill-in would be excellent from a depth standpoint.

Gold Glove outfielder Ender Inciarte had high praise for Camargo. Inciarte watched him taking fly balls in the outfield last March and came away thoroughly impressed. He even joked that Camargo was better than him.

“I don’t know if I was lying or trying to encourage him,” Inciarte said. “I know he’s going to be able to adjust to whatever role they want him to play. He has the best arm on the team. Wherever you put him, he’s going to be able to do great things. You put him in the outfield, and he has one of those opportunities to make a play with his arm or range, he’s going to surprise a lot of people.”

Except Camargo has below average speed, which coupled with inexperience doesn’t exactly scream “OF with good range”.

I mentioned Camargo to the OF months ago. Wasn’t sure if that was an option, but it sounds like it could be one albeit not a permanent move. Just another position or two he could play on occasion.

Why release him if he can be traded in a package? Maybe back to LA along with Culberson for Pedersen? A bigger deal including Teheran would work if we get a decent reliever back too. Maybe this is the 70% deal?

Wait, what? Why in the world do you think we're sacrificing defense and framing for offense at catcher? Flowers is an elite pitch framer and McCann has been a good one for most of his career, while neither of them are very good hitters right now.

At Markakis price couldn’t we release Duval and use Neck as a 4th OFer?

We could, sure. We can cut Duval and wouldn't owe him a ton of money. Just doubt we'd bring Neck back as a bench bat. Trading Ender makes more sense, but no idea to who/for what. A Pedo/Acuna/Neck OF? Ehhh
