2018 Offseason And Targets

That's the beauty of the whole thing - hope they get Harper too. They won't, but that's OK. The Padres have now spent more money on free-agents in the last two years than ANYBODY - Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, whomever.

Is it smart based on the metrics? Of course not. It's great and exciting for their fans though - their ownership and management is trying to win for them.

Who gives a *hit about whether it fits the new model? Being concerned about that entirely misses the point of being a fan - it doesn't make you wrong, it just makes you a lot less fun to be around a lot of the time.

How fun was it to be a Padres fan immediately after Preller made all his previous acquisitions that led to a rebuild a year later?

How fun will it be for Padres fans in 2-3 years when they have to rebuild again?

As usual, you have no idea what you’re taking about.

Machado will only be 28-29 in 2-3 years and they have the best farm system in baseball.

Heyman reports they may want Harper, too.

Great. We will see how things are going when Machado, an aging Hosmer, and a declining Meyers are making a combined $75M for a team that has historically had a payroll under $100M.

Who’s going to pitch for them?

I can still bring it at about 50 mph and I will play for well below the minimum.

They will have to bank on their farm to cover pitching. This might be a play in hopes they can bring a few butts in the seats. They may also dump these guys in 3 years. Who knows. Just glad someone did something finally.

Their projected lineup is Kinsler, Machado, Hosmer, Myers, Reyes, Margot, Urias, Hedges/Mejia.

Thats not very good and not even counting their rotation which is full of ?'s at the moment.

My comments were intended to address moronic statements like, "Is it smart based on the metrics? Of course not. It's great and exciting for their fans though", as if short term excitement is justification for long term losing.

Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects think it's a great idea because it's "exciting, and who cares about the new metrics? Derrrrpppp".

That's definitely not as bad of a lineup as you're suggesting, but the rotation is definitely meh. They'll need to trade for at least one LEGIT TOR guy... probably one ace and another solid 2-3.

They have Gore possibly ready soon but after him, it's a bag of ?'s, their rotation is a huge concern. Bullpen is usually solid though.

My brain is still trying to understand how SD went from being a bottom 10 payroll team to giving Hosmer $144M and then Machado the largest FA contract in the history of MLB.

Meanwhile, the Braves are crying poor 2 years after opening up a brand new Braves City.

Mindboggling smh! The attendance and revenue are all up but the payroll has dropped from last year?! Makes absolutely ZERO sense to me. AA better have something up his sleeve.

Tatis will be ready soon and he’ll be a big boost. Instead of Harper they should go after Keuchel.

Now this I 100% agree with. Especially since they have a loaded system to trade for a legit ace. Something like Kluber, Keuchel, Lucchesi, Erlin, Mitchell plus that lineup would be formidable for sure.

Serious question that is off topic a bit...

High revenue teams are worried about staying under the luxury tax, but essentially have unlimited money. This is why the Red Sox are unlikely to sign Kimbrel.

What is stopping the Red Sox from giving Kimbrel a 20/85 contract ($85M over 20 years) to lower the AAV hit to essentially nothing as far as the luxury tax calculation is concerned?

These FA contracts for players in their 30s are likely their last payday anyways, so why not just sign them for the rest of their lives...literally?

I actually like that idea. Almost similar to the Mets paying Bobby Bonilla forever. Lol. It’s definitely something to consider.

Commissioner's office has to approve every deal. I doubt they let a team skirt the luxury tax rules like this. The player's union might have a problem with the AAV.
