Yankees close to a deal with Gio per Heyman

A minor league dea??

7:15pm: Rather stunningly, the deal is likely to be a minors agreement, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter link). Gonzalez would earn $3MM in the majors with games-started incentives that could boost the earnings, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). The deal includes an April 20th opt-out.

I’m trying to understand why if Pache somehow forces his way into the lineup it would be bad to have a 4+ win Haniger that is owed the minimum.

How large can the incentives be? Maybe so high and relatively easy to reach that he ends up being too expensive for the Braves?

I find it odd the Braves couldn’t use Gio for $3M considering all the injuries to the pitching early in the season.

Even with all the injuries I’m still having trouble finding a spot for Gio.

While I'm not the biggest Gio fan... he's still a 2.5 to 4 WAR pitcher after a bit of a down year last year (2 fWAR). And I'd say over all the past 3 years, he's been better and more consistent than Keuchel

I imgine the rotation as of now is Teheran, Newk, Wright and Wilson in some order. After the first week Folty or Gaus will take the 5th slot, and the other will push someone else out when he’s ready...probably Wilson to the BP with Fried. Touki in AAA. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Soroka handles with kid gloves all year and see limited action at the MLB level.

I expect Wright to take this chance and run with it for the bulk of the season.

I mean I guess you could argue he wants to see what we have in the kids so he can determine who needs to stay and who needs to go, but passing up a very affordable upgrade in Gio is a head scratcher

Even with all the injuries we are choosing between Teheran, Newk, Fried, Touki, Wilson and Wright. How does a Gio who has yet to pitch an inning this spring help.

No reason to blow money on unneeded players; we stacked. With the unneeded financial flexibility, AA plans to give $1,000 to first 1,000 fans of each home game till it's gone. This is from my best source

I don't think 4 war needs to be in the conversation for acceptable outcomes for Gio this year. It isn't realistic at all.

I don't think anyone's ever said having Haniger to go along with Acuna and Pache would be a bad thing - it's just "at what cost"?

Given the rash of Pitcher injuries so early this year, would anybody really be willing to give up two arms plus Riley for Haniger? If you did that, you're in danger of having all the other GMs offering much less for Ender because they know you don't want to use him (or Pache) as a 4th OF.

Say Haniger costs you Riley, Touki, and Wilson - and you had to take Seager's contract back. Would anyone be willing to then turn around and attach Wright or Anderson and Wentz or Muller to Ender to get Kluber? The money would fit just fine - although it would mean you don't bring Donaldson back (regardless of what type of season he has) - but you would have completely burned through the depth...and what little of it that's left is the injury-prone kids (Fried, Soroka, Gohara) plus the recently questionable health of Folty and Gausman.

Trout just signed 12 year $430M extension.

Holy ****

Even though he's from NJ, he loves playing in California and has never wanted the media coverage that comes with playing in a big East Coast market. Good for him.

We need to extent Acuna.
