2019 Trade Deadline Thread:

I'm not so sure he'd be a big upgrade for us. He's been hot lately, but he has put up a sub .800 OPS on the year in a very hitter friendly park. He has a wRC+ of 99. His defense isn't as good as Duvalls.

He might be a slight upgrade, but not a big one. Almost definitely not big enough for us to move assets for.

I don’t get the desire for Puig at all

He was very bad early. Very good late. Relatively low risk I think. Definitely more of an every day play than platoon, I guess. He's probably better than Riley or Duvall as a RH.

A Puig acquisition was to address the need for a RHH OFer.

vs RHP: Acuna and Inciarte are MLB caliber OFers, with Markakis being fine if/when healthy
vs LHP: Acuna is the only MLB quality OFer, with Duvall perhaps playing the part as well

There was a need for a RHH OFer before Markakis got hurt, that need still exists today, and it will exist even if Markakis comes back at 100%. Joyce can probably fill in as a LHH cOFer in case Markakis is done for 2019, but nobody in the organization can be paired with Acuna/Duvall vs LHP.

I think RHH cOFer should be on the shopping list.

Define assets, he's on the last year of his deal so he shouldnt be terribly expensive to get.

But other than Acuna/Duvall, we dont have much to hit vs LHP's. So he'd fill a need. Puig is probably more of an everyday bat than platoon type though.

Ah, so your rationale is to get a RH outfielder to replace Ender and/or Riley against left handed pitching. I can buy that rationale more easily than the notion that Puig or Castellanos would be an obvious upgrade over Duvall or a Duvall/Joyce platoon, which seems to be the rationale that most people are using.

All predicated in Snit actually using these platoon bats correctly.

I don’t think Riley belongs on this team anymore.

vs RHP, the postseason lineup should be:

Acuna LF
Ender CF
Markakis RF (Joyce as insurance)

vs LHP, the postseason lineup should be:

Acuna CF
Duvall RF
RHH LF (if good enough he can be everyday insurance against Markakis not coming back...hence someone like Puig)

That RHH was potentially Camargo, Culberson and Riley so far. None have worked out, though it could be argued Culberson deserves more of a shot. Some other RHH OFer could be acquired to take that spot, sending Riley to AAA. By the time Markakis comes back the rosters will expand, so the Braves will be able to accommodate 5 OFers on the roster...which was probably the plan with Duvall in September all along.

We've seen some good players get sent down to AAA by the Braves this year: Folty, Newk, Duvall. Nothing wrong with Riley being sent down. He obviously has some things to work on.

That’s why I hope they either extend JD for 2 years or go after Rendon bc I don’t see Riley’s bat full time in the lineup. I’d sell semi high on him right now.

I would have already sold high on Riley, and said so frequently over the last year, but I'm the low man on him around here. I would have also sold high on Camargo, and said as much frequently the last year or so as well. My 3rd sell high candidate was Sam Freeman.

It is worth keeping in mind Puig has significant reverse splits:

Career OPS vs RHP: .850
Career OPS vs LHP: .762

Mets rank as second worst team in BA-xBA on grounders.

Sad thing is the Braves rank 4th worst, and just replaced Swanson with Camargo for some amount of time, so Thor wouldn't see much of an overall improvement in results with the Braves.

UZR grades the Mets out as atrocious up the middle and at third, but better than the Braves (freddie has not been good defensively at all) at 1B. I really do hate defensive stats.

I think there is some reason to hope the Braves are better defensively...they certainly seem to have more talented defenders, but I guess it hasn't worked out much better that way so far this year.

Brewers and Phillies getting Lyles and Vargas for huge holes suggest the sellers and the buyers are not very aligned at this point.

Gonna be some sellers left holding a bag?
