Biden's VP shortlist comes up short

Plenty of the contenders are fine or even good. But all of them come with a “but” attached. “There is no one ideal home run choice,” one adviser says.

Yeah, well maybe it doesn’t help when you narrow your choices before the process even begins because you insist the candidate has specific genitalia, and ideally a preferred skin pigmentation.

Quotas always lead to worse quality

veep choices tend not to be home runs...the last time there was a veep candidate who was clearly of higher caliber than the top of the ticket was Lloyd Bentsen in 1988...well i guess Pence in 2016 but that's a unique case

Quotas always lead to worse quality

Dan Quayle and Spiro Agnew say hello...that white male quota system proves your point rather well...most of our history there has been a quota system on who holds high office in this country...it is gradually being dismantled...and if it takes a little reverse discrimination to accelerate the process, well history is full of ironies...as the father of 3 children with significant ancestry from ethnic minorities, i think the faster the better

The “reverse discrimination” might lead to backlash rather than acceleration if the choice is a whiff.

BTW, in the last three presidential elections, we’ve elected a minority twice and saw a woman win the popular vote...

well i believe white males remain over-represented relative to their share of the population (will that spark a backlash or do we just accept it as part of the price of doing business?) and if I may say so their presence as a group has diluted the overall quality of our choices...though Palin is a heavy anchor on the overall quality of the non-white male category

but veeps the last 3 elections:

2008: Biden, Palin
2012: Biden, Ryan
2016: Kaine, Pence
2020: ?, Pence

I count 6 white dudes and 2 NOT white dudes

for reference: white dudes as a percentage of the U.S. population is 36%...I know they are a remarkably skilled and talented lot...but still...

We already had that, Obama would be waiting tables right now if he was white. Maybe not exactly that but you get the point. His best skill was being the whitest black person. I wish he was guilty of all the things Trump accuses him of so I could see him get what he deserves.

Women have a tendency to give up career aspirations in favor of spending more time with their children.

Good for them, too

someday you might have a daughter...one with the brains and drive to be the best in her field...if her aspiration is to reach the top of her field I'm sure you will be very proud and supportive...and i say that sincerely...and if you have a son who marries a woman like that and they decide he will be the one who follows a career path that allows him to spend more time with the children, i'm sure you will supportive of that as well

I am married to a doctor.

My entire point is that women tend to want to spend more time with their children upon having children. Its natural and its biological.

My brothers wife make 6 figures at a corporation. She said she'd never be a stay at home by she like her job too much. Had a baby a year ago and is already planning on quitting once the company asks employees back to office. She says she wants to be with her daughter instead.

Sure. Some of it is biological. Some of it is cultural. It has changed over time. In my social circle, there are families in which dad spends more time at home with the kids while mom jets around the world to meetings and conferences and earns the big paycheck. My old neighbors in Oakland would be an example. The dad was a manly man. And the wife was a real woman. And the kids seemed to be turning out just fine.

I know a woman who is the news director at the top TV station in one of the biggest markets in the country. Her husband works from home and does most of the childcare.

I think such family choices have been becoming more prevalent and that this trend has some ways to go still.

And if you think of politicians like Pelosi, Thatcher, Ardern, Merkel. They have been very good for their countries. The experience of raising children is a very enriching and valuable one. We should not discount leaders (both men and women) who have devoted part of their lives to raising children.

Senate polls:

Hickenlooper up 6 over Gardner in Colorado

Cunningham up 9 over Tillis in North Carolina

Kelly up 16 (not a typo) over McSally in Arizona
