2021 MLB Draft

I don't think I've seen any other site refer to him as a reliever. Law's report actually says "His real upside is as a future starter. He’s athletic, has a starter’s delivery, and in relief has been up to 97 with a plus slider and change-up."

agreed. he was their closer, right?

those were his positions in college.

Right, but you usually do that after taking a high schooler or two. A money saver after back-to-back college arms feels strange. Maybe they're going with the 2019 approach and planning to take multiple high schoolers after round 10? Hard to tell right now.

That would be my guess. If you are going to save slot money, you have to do it relatively early because the slot values diminish fairly rapidly the longer you go.

It's all a bit underwhelming at this point. People griped about Coppolella's concentration on pitching, but Anthopoulos' approach is remarkably similar.

I've seen analysis that has Schwellenbach moving to a starting pitching role. I don't think he hits nearly enough to be a big league SS, exit velocities be damned.

There isn't really any reason to think they won't use the whole pool and this is pretty similar to what they did in 2019, so I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes an actual problem.

Conley looks interesting. Draft-eligible sophomore thanks to a transfer from Miami (FL) to Texas Tech his freshman year. Switch-hitter who has a chance to stick at SS.

Yeah, he was the closer for Nebraska this year and was excellent in the role. There were a few instances where he went 4 innings in addition to playing shortstop. He was a huge part in Nebraska's turnaround this season, glad the Braves got him.

I guess my question is what would thrill you at the 25th pick?

The draft is kind of a waste of time to get excited about but this guy supposedly throws upper 90s with movement with a plus curve.

The Braves have traditionally been great at developing changes.

The level of depression necessary to make this guy into newcomb or Folty (both MLB pitchers, one I think a successful one) is sort of interesting.

Rough year I guess.

I guess I was hoping for a toolsy hitter, but it appears that the likely choice--Taylor--is heading to Clemson. High school guys can be more expensive and maybe they are saving in the middle rounds today to try and get a couple of flyers post-Round 10 similar to when they drafted Grissom, Owens, Johnson, Backstrom, and Morton in 2019.

Agree this is all a crapshoot. I just get a bit of a kick out of all the guys who barked at Coppolella's approach when this is just about the most vanilla bunch one could assemble. They may all turn out to be great, but there doesn't seem to be much in terms of ceiling thus far.

Totally agree. We could’ve drafted five all stars so far for all we know. But vanilla is the perfect word for it. It’s just not a whole lot of fun to follow for those of us who enjoy the draft.

6th round pick is transfer from Vanderbilt. Not related (duh) to ex-Brave Marty Malloy.

Braves drafted a high schooler? Why yes they did! Coffeyville Heritage (TX) HS's AJ Smith-Shawver!

Pipeline has him 206 overall. Three star QB recruit, just started pitching in the last year and is up to 95. 6-3 with room to fill out. Pretty intriguing prospect.
