2021 MLB Draft

FG Edited the Braves Blurb to add:

Two-way Nebraska prospect Spencer Schwellenbach (second) has a relief look on the mound. The delivery comp here is JB Bukauskas, and like Bukauskas, Schwellenbach will show you mid-90s with a plus slider.

It's really interesting how different the reports are. This is what Keith Law wrote today: "Schwellenbach was a shortstop and closer for Nebraska, up to 97 with a delivery that should allow him to move to the rotation for Atlanta."

Sources: Adam Shoemaker (11th Round) and the Braves are in agreement on a signing bonus worth approximately $480K. Slot value was worth $125K.

Seeing we only drafted four HS, he probably gets the nod over Evans (who probably was a fallback to a fallback). Only thing that could conceivably (and it would be the longest of longshots) is that if the Braves have saved additional dollars (and it would have to be big-time additional dollars from some of the below slot college guys) they may be able to throw it at Evans if they failed to sign Smith-Sawver or Collins. They have to forfeit any bonus pool money from their selections in the first ten rounds that they don't sign, so it is very unlikely they could piece that together.

They are $325,000 over with the signing of Shoemaker, so I will be interested to see where the savings came from.

Any word on other signings? Brown's comments right after the draft seem to indicate they were pretty much hitting everybody's number.

That’s the only one I’ve seen — and it’s not from a traditional source. I keep waiting for the barrage of signing numbers that usually come in the days after the draft, but nothing yet. I feel like Jim Callis is usually tweeting signing info nonstop after the draft, but nothing from him. Kind of strange.

I’d imagine a lot of their savings are going to come from Dodd.

Kiley just posted his draft recap:

The Braves followed most of the pre-draft rumors and went for college upside with their first two picks. Cusick has one of the best fastballs in the draft -- maybe behind only Jack Leiter -- with velocity up to 101 mph and solid bat-missing shape at the top of the zone. His low-spin curveball still plays above average, but he's a project for Atlanta's development as there isn't really a third pitch and his command is below average in part because he's so big. Schwellenbach was viewed as a second-to-third rounder as a hit-first shortstop but will be developed as a starting pitcher in pro ball, where he's a fringe first-round talent. The risk (and why he lasted this long) is due to his pitching for the first time since high school this spring, exclusively in relief (31.2 innings in 18 appearances). There's risk with such a short recent track record on the mound and he got a collagen brace around his UCL after cleaning it up due to elbow soreness. The upside is two plus pitches in his mid-90s heater and slider, with an above-average changeup and starter traits.

After that, it's a typical role-player, college-type draft. Dodd is a lefty with solid average stuff and moxie, Conley and Waddell are bat-first infielders, Malloy is more of a power/corner type. The later upside picks are seventh-rounder Texas prep RHP A.J. Smith-Shawver (plus physical tools, quarterback, up to 96 mph but raw; rumors it's low seven figures), eighth-rounder Texas prep CF Tyler Collins (70 or 80 runner from Jordan Lawlar's travel team; is raw with some feel for contact; sounds like mid six figures) and 11th-rounder Canadian prep LHP Adam Shoemaker (6-foot-6 and up to 94 mph).

Seeing they are already $325,000 over from the Shoemaker signing, they must really signing guys for way below slot between Schwellenbach and the two high school players. If Sawver-Smith is slated to get at least a million they'd have to drum up another $800,000 and depending on what mid-six figures means, they probably need another $400,000 to sign Collins. I am hard pressed to see where they will come up with the money unless they are getting savings from Cusick and maybe Schwellenbach. I don't see McGill or Spain requiring much, but there's not a ton of savings there.

Given the questions surrounding Cusick's control and his lack of a third pitch, it's probably not that hard to imagine him signing for around $2.2 million IMO. There's ~ $600K, and if you get McGill and Spain for around $50K each that gets you pretty close.

Interview with 17th rounder Tyler Tolve from when the was in high school. After listening to the interview, I can't believe the Marlins didn't draft him.

Was their something fishy about it?

Question for the room, and I am embarrassed to admit I don't know this straightaway -- but is there a limit for the size of the contract you offer the undrafted amateur free agents?

Callis: 5th-rder Luke Waddell signs w/@Braves for $247,500 (pick 157 value = $333,300). Georgia Tech SS, excellent contact hitter, solid speed & arm, versatile. @MLBDraft

Callis: 3rd-rder Dylan Dodd signs w/@Braves for $122,500 (pick 96 value = $604,800). One of best 5th-yr collegians in @MLBDraft. Southeast Missouri State LHP, plus changeup, deceptive low-90s fastball, strikes w/four pitches. Similar story to Joey Lucchesi.

Looks like they $243,100 to the good after those signings. +$482,300 for Dodd/+$85,800 for Waddell/-$325,000 for Shoemaker.

9th-rder Liam McGill signs w/@Braves for $7.5K (pick 277 value = $151.3K). Grad student led nation in hitting for @_bryantbaseball, mostly played 1B, can catch (was drafted as a catcher). @MLBDraft #Braves #MLBDraft

That would seem to add to the upside by $143,800, which would raise that total to $386,900 to net positive.

Side note on McGill. His brother Shawn played in the Braves' minor league system for several seasons.

12th-rder Andrew Hoffmann signs w/@Braves for $125k. Illinois RHP, good size (6-ft-5), low-90s sinker, best pitch is low-80s slider. 2.87 ERA with 64 K in 62.2 IP. @MLBDraft
