2021 MLB Draft

6th-rder Justyn-Henry Malloy signs w/@Braves for $297,500 (pick 187 value = $257,400). Georgia Tech 3B, bat speed & strength for power (11 HR this spring), solid D at hot corner. @MLBDraft

Malloy is going to be one we end up really happy with

Not much underslot at all for Cusick.

1st-rder Ryan Cusick signs w/@Braves for $2.7 million (pick 24 value = $2,831,300). Wake Forest RHP, holds velo on high-spin mid-90s fastball that peaks at 102 mph, much improved power curveball, sinking changeup too. @MLBDraft

I'm a little surprised that he wasn't further underslot.

Sounds like we have an outside shot at Anglin anyway.

I would think so. It certainly isn't easy to be in his position. He's not going to rack up a huge bonus, but situations like this remind me of the Josh Anthony selection in 2016 (and coincidentally he was also a 16th round pick). Anthony had torn up the league at Western Oklahoma JC (where Andrelton Simmons played) for two seasons when the Braves picked him. Although it looks like it might turn out to be a solid draft, there were a few oddball things that happened that left many scratching their heads. The thing most remember is the drafting of Brandon Whites in consecutive rounds (Rounds 12 and 13), but it was also the year of the Josh Anthony negotiations that left many fans disappointed.

The Braves and the Anthony team were between $25,000 and $50,000 apart (could be different numbers, but I remember it wasn't insurmountable) but the Braves were totally tapped out. At that juncture, the Braves were made aware of an undisclosed arm injury by one of their earlier picks and tried to reduce the above-slot bonus that player received (can't remember which pitcher and the story may be apocryphal in its entirety although I seem to recall it and I'm not totally demented yet) and move it toward Anthony. The Braves tried to do it, but MLB said, "Sorry Braves. A deal is a deal and you have to honor the terms of the agreed upon offer sheet unless the pick agrees to void the deal." Anthony did not sign and went to Auburn, where he did alright, but was never drafted again and only played a few games of independent league ball. One would have to ask the Anthonys if they would do it the same way if they had to do it over and I'm not going to criticize them for the decision they made. My point is that it isn't easy for guys like Josh Anthony then or Kris Anglin now in the spot they were chosen and weighing that against their future.

Baseball america only has Shoemaker and Anglin as our two unsigned picks (outside of Evans). With Shoemaker’s deal done now as Heyman reported, looks like it’s all down to Anglin.

Heyman reporting the Shoemaker signing for 480 if anyone was still skeptical of the source. https://twitter.com/jonheyman/status/1417913765681668098?s=21

Unfortunately Heyman is the guy that everyone around here loves to throw rocks at.

I hope the info is right, but it hasn't been reported anywhere else - would just be nice to see someone else report it other than a 24 year old college kid and Heyman since he spends 2 hours a day with his nose buried in Brian Kenney's *ss, Kinda tough to pick up "breaking news" that way.

Uh, alright.

Uh, alright.

Just pointing out the presiding sentiment around these parts - go back and read through the offseason thread and see how many posters called Heyman "useless" and that didn't believe anything he breaks,
