2022 Trade Deadline

I mean, my first thought was, "but why?" However, he's been a 123 wrc+ as a RH batter for his career, and is producing to a 189 wrc+ clip as a RH this season; so it looks like the key is to ignore the fact that he's technically a switch-hitter, and assume he's the RH platoon partner for Rosario.

Would still like to see someone in the Happy class of player, who can play 2B for now but would represent insurance in case Rosario continues to play like crap.

Grossman is far from a world-beater, but his RHH splits are far better than his LHH splits. Not a very good fielder.

It was funny. I was listening to the Twins/Tigers game leaving a parking ramp (went to the Comedy Bang! Bang! live show). Twins' announcing team was wondering why the Tigers weren't using Grossman as a pinch-hitter in a key situation. Given that, I thought Grossman might be on the move. Wasn't thinking Braves per se, but thought Grossman might be on the move,

We’ve made 3 trades and given up basically nothing. I think AA will pull off one maybe 2 more trades. I’d guess we really need another bp arm now. Holding out hope for Happ or Thor.

The lineup in the playoffs should be:

vs RHP
Acuna RF
Swanson SS
Olson 1B
Riley 3B
Contreras DH
Albies 2B
TDA C
Rosario LF
Harris CF

vs LHP
Acuna RF
Swanson SS
Olson 1B
Riley 3B
Contreras DH
Albies 2B
TDA C
Grossman LF
Heredia CF

With Snit ready to PH for spots 8/9 the moment the opposing manager tries to get the platoon advantage.

That’s likely the bulk of the Braves roster moves. But AA in the past has doubled and tripled down on a need before Green/Martin/Melancon and the OFs last year. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if he adds an additional starter, utility piece or bullpen arm.

If Kirby Yates comes back in the 90th percentile of recovery outcomes, that will solve a lot of the bullpen issues.

I don’t imagine Alex is done looking around. Have to think the chances of Thor are down some. Happ I think could still be a possibility along with maybe Merrifield. Depending on how Albies is recovering, still could look at someone to play second. I still would not be terribly surprised if there is a deal for a back of the bullpen arm. Perhaps someone like Ian Kennedy or David Robertson. Two possibilities off the top of my head.

Interesting. I was trying to parse the escalators in Odorizzi's deal, and it looks like they do indeed span 2021 and 2022:

Odorizzi’s contract is a factor here. He’s earning $5MM this year but would gain $500K upon reaching 100 innings plus $1MM each at 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 innings. Given a dozen additional starts at most, 120 innings would seem to be the likely ceiling. Odorizzi also has a player option worth $6.5MM with a $3.25MM buyout, but as Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle explains it, “Odorizzi’s player option can max out at a $12.5 million base salary and a $6.25 million buyout — but only if he pitches in 30 games in which he records 12 or more outs in 2021-22. After Sunday, Odorizzi has 29 such games across 2021-22.” Given that the pitcher has at least $3MM at stake in making one more four-inning start, it was mutually beneficial for the Astros to find a team that was more comfortable letting him reach that threshold.

Not sure what his market will look like (and a lot will hinge on if he thinks he can make another $6.25m in 2023 FA to tack onto his buyout), but I can more easily see him exercising that $12.5m player option than the $6.5m base option, especially if he likes the team.

It sort of just dawned on me that AA was able to dump Smith's contract for a useful SP.

I'm very happy with that trade!

I am too. Houston had a surplus of starters and they needed a lefty in the pen. So it was a trade both teams get something useful for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if AA packaged Anderson and Ozuna to get a bigger piece. Someone we haven't thought of.

I thought about that with Anderson. Odorizzi will be a back end starter of course but I think Strider is either fixing to go to the bp or really get his innings limited. We need Strider fresh for the playoffs. Grossman should never hit LH again. Ever.

That first trade is a real coup—but makes a little more sense in light of Odorizzi's escalators. Given the $1m buyout for Smith, he's still owed just over $5.3m (presuming the Astros don't so something heinous and pick up his 2023 option), while Odorizzi will be owed between $8.4m (~$2.2m for this season, plus a $6.25m buyout) and ~$14.7m (if he were to exercise his option). That's a net of $3.1–9.4m, depending on that option variable.

Still, that's exactly the sort of shrewd move you want to see, with a burgeoning payroll and limited minor-league assets: taking on salary to turn a below-replacement reliever into an average-ish starting pitcher.

Grossman with pretty stout numbers against lefties but pretty sad numbers overall. Have the Tigers just been blatantly misusing him?

Baez and pretty much everybody with Detroit has been trash this year. Maybe AA sees something they can fix with Grossman. We all thought Soler was toast when he got here last year.
