2023 Misc Braves Talk

The #Braves today recalled RHP Allan Winans to Atlanta and placed RHP Yonny Chirinos on the 15-day injured list, backdated to August 20, with right elbow inflammation.

You know, in hindsight, it's kind of stunning that Strider threw 2 1/3 innings over two appearances in 2021 without registering a strikeout.

Arcia has a chance at 20 bombs. That would mean we'd have Acuna, Albies, Riley, Olson, Ozuna, Rosario, Murphy and Arcia all with 20.

I found the stat posted in the Friday game thread interesting - The Braves are 11,001 - 10,862 as of last night's game. One would think with 30 years of sustained success they'd be better than that, but they went into the 1991 season 523 games below .500 (8102-8625). The Braves managed to get above .500 for the first time in 2011 (the season we'd all like to forget), fell back below .500 by 2017, and back above in 2018. Indeed, since 1991 the Braves are 2899-2237, good for .562 winning percentage.

Pretty crazy that they were that far below .500 when they basically didn’t lose in the 1800’s and had, like, 22 straight winning seasons between the late ‘40’s and early 1970’s.

They must have really been **** in between. Come to think of it, they were.

In my childhood they were so bad it was like … well I can’t even think of anything that bad - maybe re-runs of Lawrence Welk -

As a kid I went to a game in old Fulton County. I caught a Dale Murphy home run…..it bounced off those tarp coverings they used to cover the football retractable seats in right field……there was like 1000 people in the stadium. Next day during bp I went down and got him to sign it. I was the only person there. He stayed there for 15 minutes talking to me and not a single soul came down in those 15 minutes. Different times lol

The Haas/Wine/Tanner/Nixon years were really bad. I could never figure out why Torre was let go, but Mullen wasn't a very good GM and the Barker trade was a bad move (which was probably prompted by Turner). Cox took over in 1986 and let Tanner bring in a bunch of guys with zero tread left on their tires at the big league level while he and Paul Snyder rebuilt the farm system. That said, Cox held on to Murphy too long and traded Bedrosian and Milt Thompson for Ozzie Virgil, Jr., and Pete Smith, so his record as GM wasn't stainless.

When does Ozzie come back? He’s running on a treadmill so it can’t be long

It's been said he should be back right around his scheduled DL time. I dont think he was that injured, just with the lead we have no real reason to rush him back plus it gets him so time off since Snit doesnt give starters days off other than LF/C/DH.

On the Acuna stolen bases vs Betts convo... etc.

I was curious how his OBP/SLG numbers would be impacted if we incorporated SBs as total bases & outs. Basically just converting the stolen bases to to total bases/outs to match the traditional view of OPS offense.

For OBP, I removed his 11 CS from his on base numbers, because the caught stealing meant he no longer is on base. He gets no benefit from the steals. This lowered his OBP from .418 to .399

For slugging, I removed his 11 CS from his total bases, then added in the 58 SBs... The net of this is 47 additional total bases in his power numbers. That raised his SLG from .570 to .662(!).

The net of it all was it moved the OPS number from .988 to 1.061, or 7% higher.

I know I know this isn't a perfect way to look at it and a single + a steal is still not as valuable as a double... but isolating his offensive impact using the SB as total bases was an interesting way of looking at it to me
