2024 Minor League Thread

From what I understand he is a groundball pitcher so I am okay without elite k rates so long as he is getting a lot of groundballs. Zero strikeouts would be concerning but I dont need to see 1+ k per inning like I look for in most prospects. Being a groundball guy his results should be inflated a bit because minor league defenses and fields are sub par. So he when I see 3 hits in 6 innings I have to think he was getting easy groundball outs and wasnt aided by hard hit ground balls that a defender turns into an out.

I get that as I'm very familiar with him... but when you are a high velocity pitcher you need to strike out some people... a ~7-8 K/9 in the lower minors is not going to be pretty in the MLB unless he starts learning how to increase that rate a bit.
 
Waldreps only issue is raising its ugly head. I promise if he could command that FB just a little, no way he's a Brave today. Listening instead of being there, he falls behind where the (arguably) best weapon in milb can't be effective. If you get him down 2-1..3-1..it's open season on his FB. He's got ace potential seriously....

I’m with you guys in him- I think he’s our best pitcher - and I know very little, and am usually wrong - but his FB is - as stated above - a weapon. I think they may end up grooming him to be a closer - but I said that about Strider too-

I think Waldrep is going to end up a reliever but I think teams should use the pen to transition pitchers to majors more. They used to do it. They still do it in Japan. I would give Waldrep till mid 25 to figure things out as a starter. Let him come to ST with a chance to compete for a rotation spot. If he still hasnt broken the major league rotation by mid 25 I would try him in the pen and see if he can be a cheap replacement for Iglesias in 26. From there depending on performance and team need we could try and give him another chance a a starter. With that projected path he wouldnt hit Arb till 2031 so there would be plenty of time to give him another shot as a starter.

It is a bit odd looking at the box score because his strike-to-ball was slightly greater than 2-to-1. Of course, balls in play count as strikes so 11 of his strikes ended up being hits. You were tuned in and I'm always curious about the quality of contact when looking at minor league box scores. 1 HR and 10 singles and I'm wondering how hard the singles were hit.

Fried was a reliever/spot starter when he first came up for a couple seasons.

Newk was great for 1 season as a reliever. Then they tried to turn him back into a starter and that predictably failed.

That's about it for the more heralded prospects.

Some less heralded guys that we transitioned to relivers are Victor Vodnik and Jasseel De La Cruz.

He was getting hit pretty hard, but they were sitting fastball. The ones who couldn't, he put away which is encouraging. The biggest thing for him dating back to last year when he was lights out, is that command doesn't begin with 0-1 counts. 2-1, 3-1 should not be Auto fastballs but so far it is. And if they are, he should be able to command it enough not to throw a FB right down the middle. Even at AA, they can hit that. That's what happened.

The kinks will get worked out. He's a confident dude and works hard.
 
Excited to see Kuehler is starting for Augusta tonight. No Rome pitcher announced yet, but Lucas Braun is the only one of their starter prospects who hasn't thrown so I would guess him. JJ Neikro starting in Mississippi.
