2024 MLB Draft

and?? that is no reason not to select quality players that could be used as capital for other needs or to replace one of the under performing locked up players.. that is a dumb argument.

I mean they’ve got a limited amount of money, you can’t just pick the best available player every round

They’ve gotta take underslot guys with upside at some point

I think the frustration may be is that by going for a way over slot guy early, you've put a lot of eggs in that basket. The counter would be, just take guys who will accept each slot value in which they are drafted. For the record, I'm not frustrated. This is how Anthopoulos has basically done it by shuffling around his bonus pool. It just looks like money will be moving toward the first round pick this year instead of away from him.

Kind of confused about the magnitude of that meltdown

It's a pair of day 2 picks in the MLB draft, I have trouble believing Matt or the AI writing prospect copy for mlb.com actually knows anything substantial about either player or the Braves' plan for this draft

The Braves have, by and large, drafted and developed well under AA

There's just no point in getting worked up right now

You can go back and probably see the same reactions from players like Nacho, Baldwin and hell even Strider

Rumor is Caminiti may come a little cheaper than expected but it’s hard to fault them for jumping on a kid like that when he falls in your lap

Truth is none of us know how good or bad these players might be…the Braves MO in drafts has been taking athletic pitchers with repeatable deliveries with amazing metrics

Sinnard for instance had the highest fastball spin rate and also the best induced vertical break (FB) at the MLB Draft Combine

Our last 3 picks makes me think caminiti is way over slot

He's gonna be over, but unless he's like 1.5 over, the last couple picks dont make a ton of sense. Unfortunately the MLB draft isnt like others, where you can just go BPA every other pick. There's a science to it, with the draft pool.

It would be nice to have 1 fuggin year where we don't take a pitcher with 8 out of our first 10 picks and instead take a bunch of hitters with different skill sets.

People used to carp about Roy Clark pitching-heavy drafts, but the approach hasn't changed all that much during Anthopoulos' tenure. A few more hitters in the first ten rounds, but not that many more.

I dont mind taking Caminiti, was clearly BPA, but other picks? Taking some hitters isnt gonna be the end of the world. I mean, how many damn pitchers do we need lol.

We do have alot of the hitting core locked up for the most part but even then, cant predict injuries, and players regressing, etc.

That's true (although if there is any significant fall-off in production out of the current core it gets dicey), but injuries do happen like they have this season and there simply aren't many position players in the system showing a ton of promise. There are some useful parts and a couple of guys who could be solid regulars, but the international signings have been spotty at best once the penalties were lifted (although we have yet to see Perdomo). It would be nice to have a more reliable pipeline.

PS--Looks like big savings in Round 8. Samuels is a senior from a small school.

Looks like more savings in the 9th with another senior pitcher taken. Not a ton of savings as we wind down to the end of the 10th, but it provides some flexibility, not only for Caminiti because I wouldn't be surprised if they have to go over a bit for the other two high school guys they have drafted thus far.

Another senior in the 10th, LHP Jacob Kroeger from Maryville U (Missouri).

Thus far: 7 College (all pitchers), 3 HS (2 pitchers, 1 hitter).

They may have some savings to throw at post-10th guys like they did big-time in 2019. Doubt they will have that much in terms of savings, but there could be a couple of high school guys they have simply waited to draft tomorrow in order to preserve their whole 1st-to-10th pool in the event those guys didn't sign after being drafted in the first 10 rounds.

Can someone point me to the exact moment Matt turned into a little bitch? FFS, msstate doesn’t even whine this much.

This has been another really good draft for the Braves. Caminiti is a crazy good get at 24. Only 17, great delivery, 70-grade fastball with a strong overall repertoire. I’m stoked.

I think the Braves approach is go pitching in the draft and hitting on the international front. Its a sound plan if they get the right guys.

That end of the equation is not going that well at this point. Young guys and it's a steep learning curve for teenagers, so it's too early to tell on a lot of guys. I think is where the elimination of the Short-Season A Leagues (Braves had an Appalachian League team) has really stunted the development of a lot of guys.
