2025-2026 offseason thread

56 innings isn't really enough data to tell whether or not he figured it out. And even if he has figured it out, what exactly does figuring it out mean? It's unlikely he is an Ace level pitcher. So is he more Logan Gilbert or is he more Bryce Miller? Both are valuable pitchers (or at least they have been), but you're probably not building around Miller long term.

These are the assessments the Braves have to make on guys like Waldrep. Certainly we would have been better off selling high on guys like Anderson and Elder when the data showed they were likely more likely to be back of the rotation pitchers. I would include Wright as well, but Wright blew his shoulder out before we could see if he could build on that one season of success.
He throws a split a third of the time. XBA .163, XSLG .262 and XWOBA .224. He stopped throwing a four seamer without control and started throwing a sinker with excellent control. There’s no guarantee, but the changes he made are stark and data supported and his starting point was with a ++ splitter that he can now get to to put people away.

The last guy I’d trade to acquire some swinging dick to play SS is Waldrep.

Are you saying that Waldrep’s split is deadly?

is the upside of trading Waldrep and getting a legit SS via trade and then going out and buying a FA SP to cover those innings better than just keeping Waldrep and signing a legit SS? Waldrep is cheap as hell and has options.. he is super valuable to the Braves right now. He is not going to be traded.

The only possible way it makes sense to trade Waldrep now is if some team values him as a TOR guy with 5 years of control because he's almost certainly not that good. If other teams value him as a poor man's Schwelly, which is likely what he is with that revamped arsenal, then it makes zero sense to trade him. Enjoy the MOR SP that contributes quality innings for cheap, and find a SS elsewhere.

With Waldrep its about the way he talks about him. Like he talks about 4 locks for rotation spots then says we got other guys like Waldrep and Elder. AA talks about adding multiple starters. Theres only so many spots. If we are talking trades we have to give to receive. Would you rather trade Ritchie and Fuentes and still get less in return. Waldrep has 6 years of team control left. We need to cash in to fix SS. Waldrep for CJ Abrams would be perfect.

Bryce Elder is out of options also so he will probably start out in the bullpen. If we don't get another SP it'll be Sale, SS, SS, Lopez, and Waldrep with Holmes, Elder, Ritchie, and Wentz as depth. The depth is a lot better than last year but I feel like we need one more SP.
I think Elder is in the rotation as the 6th man. Considering Hefner’s style as a pitching coach and the injury concerns with the rotation i think we’ll be using a six man rotation alot especially early.

Sale
Strider
Schwellenbach
Lopez
Waldrep
Elder

Wentz
Dodd/Payamps/Jimenez

Unfortunately I think they start Waldrep in AAA unless he just goes nuts in ST. Elder could be traded since he's out of options

Waldrep is one of the few guys on the pitching staff with options. The fact that he’s not a lock for opening day says more about the lack of guys with options we have and less about our belief in him

We’d definitely have to get another SP for that. I think it’s possible that Waldrep starts AAA though. I’m not totally sure it’s worth moving Elder with this roster though. He has his stinkers for sure and he’s not a playoff pitcher but he has been very good at soaking up innings which with our top 4 is something we need.

Abrams is probably the worst defensive SS in baseball. Doubt that happens.

If we bring in another SP as reported that we want to, Elder is no better than the 7th SP. Really, he's more like 8th or 9th when you consider Holmes and the rookies.

He's probably traded by the end of ST.

This. Elder may have given us innings in the past but that doesn't mean he should have. AA didn't provide any depth with an injury prone pitching staff. If Elder is getting a lot of starts this year then something went terribly wrong and AA screwed up again. Start Waldrep over Elder all day and damn the options for Elder. If we make a trade for a SS maybe we can slide Elder in there as filler.
