2025 Spring Training Thread

If 7 ip is proof soroka is back, 9 ip is proof newcomb is back/arrived/something...

3 bb

Now go show me his 3 above average pitches and his average 4th pitch that just gained 2 more mph. Then we can talk small sample size. I have not once touted his spring numbers. Only his pitch data.

I won't pretend to know how to interpret all the statcast data, but here's soroka last season...

It doesn't look that good to me.

don't look at those boxes.. those are result based for the most part. Xwoba and Xwobacon are nice.. those are weighted expected results.. bacon (who doesn't love bacon) is derived from Xwoba, but eliminates non balls in play... walks/K's/HBP.. so it basically gives you an idea of the contact a pitcher is giving up.. But with Soroka, look at his pitch movement. That is where he shines.. anything above 0 is moving more than average.. So Soroka is still making the ball dance, the problem it looked like was he couldn't control it as well as he used to. That leads to more walks and harder contact. assuming his gifted talent didn't just fall out of his amputated leg, then I would bet he will get closer and closer to that command he once had as he gets more reps.

now look at Holmes.. none of his pitches grade above average as a whole.. they move, but only one way.. I assume his slider being a downer slider is an effective pitch because it drops like a split, but with more bite because it has more spin. I honestly don't know what he is doing to get the great results.. I am interested in seeing his stat cast data as the season progresses.. I bet his stuff ticks up a bit more this year over last.

Profar needs to be healthy for opening day just to spare us from having to watch snit put Albies and his .300 OBP in the leadoff spot.

Am I wrong in saying that low OBP is this offense's Achilles heel?

Without Acuña we don't have a lot of high OBP options for leadoff, or really any spot in the lineup beyond Ozuna or Olson (if he hits for enough average to keep it up). Profar was good last year but he doesn't have a track record of high OBP. We really have to pin our hopes on his improvements from 2024 being real.

The only reason Profar didn't have higher OBP numbers in the past was because his batting average was so low. His walk and K-rates are roughly the same since 2021. The difference is he hit .280 last year instead of his usual .220 to .240. So, basically it's all about whether you believe the leg kick/adjustments he made last year were real (seems him and his coaches/past teammates think they are for real but obviously they are gonna say that). I choose to believe they were real... haha. He has the pedigree, so I'm hopeful.

.305 in the first half .243 in the second half. Guess which ones the aberration. The good news is he still put up a .360 OBP in the second half so if we get that Profar its still good.

Oh yeah Schwellenbach was just scratching the surface last year. All he needs is health and experience. Most impressive rookie braves pitcher I can remember.
