4/13/15 GDT Callaspo at 2nd, batting 2nd

The runs scored thing is heavily skewed thanks to the 12 run game.

Our pitching looks the part. I really like 90% of what Shelby is. If he can just develop some consistency with his secondary pitches then he will be really good.

Nobody expects the Braves to be at the top in runs scored. But, the point made all offseason is that you don't need to have huge sluggers to score runs.

Neither does Jordan Walden, but we didn't give a rip when it was our guy jumping toward the plate.

I didn't think Jordan actually landed on his back foot again before release. I may be wrong because I haven't seen him in a while.

What is to stop someone from taking three steps toward the plate ?

It looks like he's jumping about 2 feet forward, which is effectively adding more than 3 mph on all of his pitches, from the batter's perspective.

It isn't really the jump, but the fact his back foot lands again well before he releases the ball? If the rules are that wide open then there are really ways to gain an advantage I would think

Exactly, which Walden does not do. Walden also drags his foot and never quite sets it again. Capps pretty much digs in with it again while the ball is still behind his back.

An underrated surprise of the young season so far for me is that CB seems like he knows what he is doing at the plate. I haven't really seen him chase too many awful pitches yet and has taken some close ones as well. This guy was billed as a big time hacker.

I agree thethe - he surprises me every game with something. Last night there were two things.

Of course the stolen base and the confidence and awareness that Latos was taking him for granted. The second was catching the pop up at the on deck circle. I don't remember ever seeing such an athletic play from a Braves catcher

He had a couple of hacky ABs early, but has looked better since. He's been one of the pleasant surprises for me this season...I've really enjoyed watching him.

Joe mentioned in the broadcast last night that CB looks more focused and confident than he did last year. Joe says a lot of goofy stuff, but that one was right on.

Yeah, this guy has always gotten better every time he repeated a level. I know a lot think that doesn't mean anything and we are to discount performances when a prospect repeates but if he follows the same pattern then we could end up being in a much better spot than we previouly thought. Both CB and Simmons development at the plate (SO EARLY) has been a huge plus to the season.

He has a 48.4% swing rate on pitches out of the zone (slightly higher than Simmons and would be borderline top 10 in MLB). Hes also up their with Simmons and Freeman on total pitches swung at.

He's going to be one of the most athletic catchers in baseball for sure.

Both guys seem to have made some progress. I've always thought that Tron had both the ability and (especially) the desire to improve and grow as a player.

That said, they are both going to be tested. If they can maintain focus and continue to adjust this year, it'll be huge for the future, regardless of how this season plays out.

Thats too general of an analysis. There are pitches that are an inch or two off the plate and there are those that are 6-8 inches off the plate.

Everything is too small of a sample size at this point but I am seeing a competant hitter up at the plate in CB. No, not a stud by any means but this guy was billed as being a complete black hole with no chance to be even average.

Also, depending on the situation and what hte hitter is looking for swinging a pitch right outside of the zone can be ok. If you are leaning over the plate and want to go to RF (for CB) then those pitches are good pitches to hit.

Unless you are Vlad Guerror, your batting average on pitches 1-2 inches off the plate, is going to be ridiculously low. Heck, even pitches near any of the four corners are typically extremely low.

Any offense he gives us will be fantastic bc he should be a really solid defender. But, it's been 4 games and he's still swinging a ton.

Looking back at numbers since 2002, only Vlad and Soriano have great MLB careers and swing at 25+% of pitches out of the zone. Conversely at guys under 15% you have Olerud, Giles, Chipper, Bonds, and many many more.
