Alberto Callaspo Possibly Being Traded

I could care less how they perform in a non-playoff season if they bring back nothing in a trade and in Grilli's case we get stuck paying for a declining reliever a year from now. So for me in the case of Grilli and Johnson it is more about signing them to trade them for something later. I am not saying that is the case with AJ or everyone we signed though.

Aside from the point that's is obvious that the Braves would be able to trade Grilli and Johnson (carpenter and Shreve got us Man Ban), there is value in not putting pressure on Folty, Shelby, etc to throw 9 innings a game or the game is going to get blown. It's not as if Grilli and Johnson cost a lot.

So you think it would be helpful to the development of our pitchers if we had Jaime and Kohn blowing games every night?

Don't throw Kohn in with Jaime, that is Fredi speak nonsense. Kohn is currently injured but he was effective for us unlike Jaime who will walk everyone and their grandma. Further, Kohn does walk some but has a history going back to the Angels of being effective doing so too. But that isn't to say he cannot improve or strive to cut down on the walks.

I like Kohn's arm, but it was obvious he wasn't ready. Walks in the major leagues won't ever get the job done. Having Grilli and Johnson affords him the opportunity to work on his command in Gwinnett.

We're going to blow plenty of games anyway, see last night.

He wasn't ready? He isn't a rookie or someone just getting to the Majors. Kohn has four years of Major league experience prior to this year. And Kohn has gotten the job done in the past walking a bit more than you'd like.

1976, where would the Braves bullpen be without Grilli and Johnson?

I guess I just don't care. If it's a punted season, then it's a punted season. Let's take our losses, get our high draft picks, and save as much money for the future as we can.

That's my opinion of it. If you disagree - then that is fine. If it turns out these guys get us a decent prospect, then I'll be pretty happy with that. We'll see if that happens. I can see many teams shying away from Grilli - he hasn't been that great and is signed another year. I'm sure Johnson could get us something - but nothing special.

AJ - I doubt he gets anything of value. Really - the only guy on the tosrt who I could bringins us back anything of real future value would be Jim Johnson and MAYBE Grilli.

It would be worse, but it's already not good because we have dead weight like Cahill, Masset and Stults in it. If they really cared about the bullpen or winning, then they'd not be carrying so much dead weight.

He's got a career FIP of 4.94. There's not many pitchers in the history of the game that have been able to out perform those types of peripherals.

I like Kohn. He has a chance to contribute, but the walk rate has to improve. You can't walk 6 per game and be successful.

Yeah, but he only throws 1 inning at a time so its only 2/3s of a walk per outing.

Kohn also hasn't allowed a single hit either, I'd expect as the hits start falling the walks will come down. SSS of course.

Grilli has a FIP of 2.36. That's excellent. There's definitely going to be teams interested in a guy pitching that well.

But my whole point is that those signings have worked out so far. You can disagree with that. That's your prerogative. You have disagreed with everything Hart and Co. have done so I question your objectivity. I will admit that I would be disappointed if they didn't trade Grilli and Johnson, but I won't be disappointed that we signed them in the first place.

Punt the season or not, but I care about watching the games in 2015. Nothing sucks more than watching bullpens blow late leads.

He's been largely effective in his outings despite walking too many, that was my point. I agree he could stand to improve them but I think he will if given a chance. But he's hurt now so we'll see how that goes.

A high walk rate is far more sustainable than a BABIP of .000

For his career he has a walk rate of 6 per game over 115 innings. That has to improve.

My point is that that success isn't sustainable. Regress his BABIP and he's a walking gas can.

Didn't realize his peripherals were that good. I only looked high level.

I haven't disagreed with everything Hart did. Once the decision was made to punt - we should've punted. I loved the Gattis and Kimbrel trades - really loved them. I liked a few of the smaller deals.

Markakis will never make sense. And spending a whole bunch of money on garbage confuses me as well. Unless we have a legal obligation to keep the payroll at a certain level, I don't see the point. I would have saved that money or used it to invest in our good players like Wood or Miller. Instead we're scrambling trying to give away Callaspo.

Yes - the signing have worked in the sense that the players have played well (against expectations) but if the original point was to flip them for prospects, I'm skeptical that we'll get anything of real value. We'll see

He's also put up some pretty impressive numbers considering his walk rate. So if he can bring it down just a bit, he could be very good for us. He was largely effective despite the walks so far anyway. Fredi was way too hard on him. I could understand if he were giving up hits or runs too but he gave up nothing.

Agreed. Kohn has high upside. If he starts showing improvement in AAA I would love to see him replace Massett once he's healthy again.
