Speaking of Brian McCann, this is something I cannot figure out. I've seen a lot of fans on various boards mention that they would love to get Jonathan Lucroy from Milwaukee. Lucroy is 29 years old. He's signed through 2016 and has an option for 2017. So, he will be a free agent as a 31 year old catcher. If you deal the type of prospects Milwaukee is going to want, you need to keep him longer than 2 years.

The reason McCann was not resigned though is because the team didn't want to give a long term contract to a catcher going into his age 30 season. If we weren't willing to resign McCann at 30, why would we be willing to do it with Lucroy at 31?

Lord have mercy...newsflash one day the braves will have a first baseman not named Freeman. The world didn't stop when the Jones guy hung them up either. Baseball players are a dime a dozen. Even as HOFers retire. There is always the next one down the line.

There was more to the decision not to resign Mac than his age. We had 2 decent catching prospects at the time and not much payroll flexibility thanks to the ~$86 million we owed to BJ and Uggla over the next 4 seasons, so it didn't make much sense to give Mac a lot of money especially since he had collapsed in the 2nd half for 3 straight seasons.

I don't think you need to keep him longer than 2 years. You give up your prospects on the assumption you've only got him for 2 years. If the Brewers are asking for more than he is worth then you just simply don't make the deal.

How have we looked aince those Jones, maddux, glavine guys have retired?
 
Harper just has unbelievable bat control. Giants shifted him and just served a grounder to left field for his third hit of the day. Scary to think how good he can be in Yankee stadium.
 
I know prospect pedigree matters, but there's a huge perception gap between Neftali's reputation and Neftali's actual production.

Doesn't matter. The point is baseball is a business. Heyward could have played himself into the core group that includes Freeman, Julio, and Simmons he did not. Offensively the guy has been a dud compared to the expectations of 2010, not unlike Frenchy before him.
