It was always a good bet that Latos' clubhouse issues would lead him to come at a discount, but this is more of a discount than I was expecting. IMO, he's a good gamble for a team with a veteran starting staff and a strong managerial presence to keep him under wraps. We're 0 for 2 on those criteria, so I'm fine with the Braves steering clear.

Astros designated hitter Evan Gattis recently underwent surgery to repair a hernia and will be sidelined for four to six weeks, reports Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. As a result, Gattis will miss “most of his Spring Training, at a minimum,” per Drellich, though the overall injury is not considered to be severe in nature.
Gattis, 29, has an arbitration hearing set for Feb. 16, and Drellich notes that the new revelation in his health could have some form of an impact on the case.

there's a reason we traded him!

Who do they have to trade?

They lost probably their most interesting guys getting Frazier, but they still have some solid prospects that we could take. Tim Anderson, of course, is their future SS; doubt he's going anywhere. Carson Fulmer and Spencer Adams are both interesting pitchers, and I could see them being dealt if the Sox get desperate. Trey Michalczewski is a solid 3B prospect that I really like after watching film with him; I think he'd be a big target for us. They have a few solid but not really amazing OF prospects in Courtney Hawkins, Adam Engel, and Jacob May. Overall, I see them being a solid trade partner for us.

Wow. A's designated Sean Nolin after the Davis deal. If he makes it to us, we should definitely try and pick him up. He was a piece in the Donaldson deal, he's got decent peripherals, and he only just turned 26.

Walk rate is a bit too high. But would be worth it as a gamble.

Freese is still available, and MLBTR suggests he might not be able to get anything more than a 1 year deal:

What do folks think about Freese on a 1 year deal for under $10M with an option? He could hold down 3B, be a decent RHed bat behind Freeman, and could be a decent trade chip if the Braves decide not to keep him around for both years.

The Braves should be bargain hunting at the end of the offseason, and getting an average MLB player for less than $10M on a 1 year commitment is definitely a bargain.

I think that would be a very solid option. He could probably be had for a 1 year/8 mil with 10 mil team option at this point. Would probably mean us dumping one of Bonifacio/Johnson/Beckham, but that's not exactly a problem. He and Austin Jackson are both solid ideas for bargain players we could grab.
