Braves close to signing Callaspo

There are definitely resources to go for it in 2015, as weak as that attempt may ultimately be.

If the return for JUp isn't markedly better than the 30th pick in the draft, I assume that's exactly what Hart will do. All the moves made so far have still left a lot of flexibility with the roster. As soon as Gattis and/or JUp are moved they are committed to the rebuild.

The thing about 2017 is that the players we have now will be a lot more expensive then. I projected payrolls thru 2017 and just keeping what we have now will put payroll in the 120's. We should be trying to win now while Teheran/Wood/Miller/Simmons/Minor/Kimbrel are cheap.

We still have a young core with potential (even minus Heyward). That's why the rebuild is hard to swallow. I'd rather see Hart surround our core with leadership, experience, and consistency and give them a chance to perform.

The fascinating thing is that it could still easily go either way.

While Callaspo is good at making contact, if you start him at second with an infield including Freeman, Simmons and CJ. Then add Markakis playing right field. That is a lot of DP machines in one line-up. Both Callaspo and Markakis are slow so they'll hit into a high number of double plays (both have hit into 22 in one year before, Callaspo hit into 18 last year).

To sum it up, that is too many DP machines for killing rallies in one line-up.

A full-rebuild is not really possible with a foundation of Freeman, Simmons, Teheran, Wood, Kimbrel. Really it is a question of tinkering from year to year. The idea that you can subtract much from 2015 to add much to 2017 is kind of silly as long as you have that kind of core. Especially if payroll is not going down in 2015, which is what McGwirk said.

#Braves have been looking to K less and so like contact skills of Callaspo. Also that hired personal trainer with goal of losing 20 lbs

Yeah no kidding. JUp K's a lot, but he actually hits too.

I don't like this purging of anyone that K's, as if all contact is good.

Agreed. I rather watch a player strikeout than someone hit into a DP with one out and runners on first and third.

For the umpteenth time, there is nothing inherently wrong with striking out. Good hitters strike out because they wait to swing at hittable pitches, go deep in counts, and try to damage when they do swing.

If you K because you took a borderline strike 3 call that had a 50% chance of being called ball 4, you didn't have a bad AB.
If you K because you guessed wrong and swung hard to hit a HR with a man on first and 2 outs, you didn't have a bad AB.

If you K because you constantly swing through pitches inside the zone, you had a bad AB.
If you K because you tried to hit a 2 run HR with nobody out and a man on 3B in a tie game late, you had a bad AB.

If you don't K because you made contact on a questionable pitch and hit into a double play, you had a bad AB.
If you don't K because you made contact on a chest high pitch and hit a pop up to the pitcher, you had a bad AB.

Striking out doesn't mean you had a bad AB, and not striking out does not mean you had a good one. This isn't rocket science.

Callaspo gets a 1-yr deal for about $3M from braves. provides versatility. Will be semi regular at 2B, plus some 3B

I don't understand why I get more uptight about the Braves finances than my own.

I guess Callaspo takes Doumit's money :cooter:

Meh it aint my money, i dont care.

If they trade JUp, i wonder who they'd go after with the extra dough.

What's to like about a guy who hit .223/.290/.290/.580? He is terrible. And we are going to pay this guy $3MM? Damn
