Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Rangers now in on Kemp, too.

I wonder if the asking price for Justin is a little offsetting.

The price on Kemp would have to be a little offsetting, too, depending upon how much the Dodgers would be willing to contribute.

2 days until Winter Meetings start. A lot can happen.

So your team would rely on Freeman and Upton to carry 6 bad hitters. Ok...

6 bad hitters?? Career #'s:

Peraza- .306 / .351 / .390 (granted this is his minor league stats)
Fowler- .271 / .366 / .419
Freeman- .286 / .366 / .465
Upton- .274 / .354 / .476
Markakis- .290 / .358 / .435
Johnson- .283 / .319 / .419
Bethancourt- .270 / .300 / .379 (granted this is his minor league stats)
Simmons- .252 / .297 / .372

So 6 bad hitters?? I count 3 MAX (if you count CJ) and two of those are there for their defense. It's people like you who take away from the enjoyment of this site.

He seems very sad that they took his JHey away. He's lashing out.

Suppose Justin approached the front office and said he'd sign a 6 year/ 120 million extension if the club would give BJ no trade protection for the remaining three years on his contract. Would you take it?

Hell, yes. Wouldn't you?

That'd be six years of Justin for $165m. ****, that's below market.

I'd love to see what we could get for Gattis on the trade market. Justin to me is the type of player you resign. I could see him becoming one of the 10 best hitters in baseball consistently for the next 10 years. Those are the players you want around long term.

The more I think about it, the more I agree.

We're going to need to pay somebody to be in the hunt, and we absolutely need to get it right. Who's a better player than Upton to sign long term? Shoot, he's only a year older than Heyward, very accomplished and very consistent (over a year. I know he's streaky.)

We'll find out if that's what the John club wants. I doubt it.

10 years? That would be a horrible deal in the end.

Didn't say that's what I would want to give but just the type of longevity I think Upton could have. Guy knows how to hit.

He knows how to hit when he hits. He's still prone to massive slumps. And while I don't really have an issue with that he's not the type of guy who I think will age well.

I'm assuming we trade JUP, but I am beyond happy with the idea of extenting him and keeping him as our cleanup man. This lineup is simply a lot better with him. Gattis could snag us a lot with the right deal. Id be down with package deals to get rid of BJ and raise our financial planning as well. More money could replace Gattis (to a degree) and add needed complimentary parts.

I dunno. He's thick but he's not flabby. Looks can be deceiving. Look no further than his big brother, who looks like he could run a 44 second quarter mile.

I just think he's going to become a Manny Ramierez out there in left without his hitting ability. I would sign Justin to somewhere in his early 30's. I just wouldn't do a monster 10 year deal which is what I'm going to assume he's going to want. The only time I'd be willing to do something like that is to someone like Heyward say last year so he's locked up until he's 33. Now I understand that sometimes you have to sign good hitters to bad contracts to get them with the understanding that the last few years are likely going to suck. I just don't think the Braves can be one of those teams. They have to make smart short term deals or big deals that just keep a player through us prime years.
