Braves Draft Pick Thread

I've always been a big fan of drafting high school players, but I have to admit that the Braves recent luck with high school kids has soured me on that some.

Our track record with HS kids in the first 5 rounds is at least as good as our record with college players. After the first five rounds, we seem to do better with college players.

When it comes to the draft, I can (and this year will likely be no exception) find something to gripe about, but this is about as straightforward an approach I've seen from the Braves in Rounds 1 and 2 for a long time. Two guys that were taken where they were pretty much ranked (Fulenchek actually ranked in the 50s by the three places I check). Only question marks are where Davidson ends up on defense and Fulenchek's level of competition.

Should be an interesting afternoon.

Agree

I just love getting projectable pitchers in our developmental system. High hopes for Fulenchek.

I'm curious to see if they continue to go high school today. They need some left handed pitching in the system. I doubt they go with Mac Marshall. I saw him tweet out last night that he was going to LSU since he didn't get drafted in the first round. I wonder if they may be in on George County MS's Justin Steele?

Felix Falcon is the lefty I would keep an eye on. And we don't even have to draft him!

Also Luis Merejo is coming back from TJ surgery.

I'm not even going to pretend to know the first thing about Davidson or attempt to evaluate him as a player based on limited highlight tape. But the people who get paid to evaluate talent by major media organizations seem to like him, and if you had asked me before the draft what the organization's big need was, I probably would have said left-handed power bats. You can't really draft for need in the major league draft, but you can still draft to address organizational weaknesses.

Plus, if his approach is as patient and sophisticated as some of the scouting reports indicate, maybe he can move a little faster than most high school draftees.

So, kudos.

But can they sustain it over al ong period of time without deterioration and then injury?

WHy would their knee go out? It is very similar to my approach that wasn't bc I was a power hitter, moreso bc I had a lack of it.

I wonder if that had any influence on them taking Fulencheck in the 2nd. I liked what I read about Marshall (and I liked what I read about Fulenchek). I think the thing about Fulenchek is his projection. Looks to have a nice ceiling and Marshall may be viewed as more of a finished product.

Someone will draft Marshall, but I don't know how much of a payday he could reap given all the cash machinations that would have to take place to meet his likely cash demands.

It just seems like a violent twist. I really don't know what I'm talking about with the mechanic of the swing. Just seems like it would be damaging.

This guy's swing is like baseball porn.

Yep. Quiet mechanics. Stays back. Really firm front side and finishes high. Only minor criticism I've read is that he is a bit pull-happy.

He is solidly built. Always difficult to discern weights, but he sure doesn't look like he weighs 215 pounds. Solidly built kid.

PS--I could never hit, but I have read a lot about hitting and if you look at Davidson's swing from the side, you will see that his right leg is straight on impact and there is a straight line from his right ankle to his right shoulder. There's a bit of a knee bend when he opens his swing, but that straightens out and his front side firms up. When a player has bad mechanics, the line at impact isn't straight and that's when you experience a higher rate of injuries. Davidson has darn near perfect hitting mechanics for a high school kid.

He seems to be more in line with the Jason Heyward/Freddie Freeman pick than their recent high school picks.

I was following a draft chat last night, and the scout explicitly said that Davidson and Freeman are not a comp when it comes to approach. Davidson, at least at this stage of his career, is not a "line drives to all fields" type of player. But I get your drift. Davidson--like Heyward and Freeman--is a polished high school hitter.

Anyone on your wish list today, 50? Some of the names I see that I like what I read about are Cobi Johnson and Dylan Cease as RHP prospects. I also wonder if the Braves will try to get another young catching prospect to go along with Bryan De La Rosa, who has not shown he can hit, and Tanner Murphy.

Also, I hope the Braves put in a call to Mac Marshall and feel him out. Tell him that they understand he's disappointed in not goign in round one, but they will sign him over his third round slot if he will sign with them. Gets the Braves a quality young pitcher and keeps him from going to LSU.

I don't follow it like I used to. Looks like Mac Marshall is off the table, but I wonder if they take a flyer on him late ala Alec Grosser in 2013. Big difference is that Grosser was a bit under the radar and Marshall is well known.

Eric Skoglund's name got tossed around in the other thread so there was some twitter buzz about him. He'd be a nice addition. RHP Jake Cosart has good bloodlines. As I look at the system, I think we need to add a lot of pitching depth and I wouldn't mind if they concentrated heavily on that today.

I think a solid catching prospect (maybe a college guy like Florida's Taylor Gushue) would make sense. I like Indiana 3B Dustin DeMuth, but he's a cut below the IU guys who were drafted yesterday and I don't know if his bat projects as a 3B.

Middle IF seems to be the one place we're fairly well stocked right now and we seem to lack OF prospects. I know drafting for need is a sure way to find the drain, but I hope we find a couple more projectable OF prospects the next two days.

Always hard to tell. Last year they were all over the board. I think part of that was to accommodate the drafting of Grosser and meeting his salary demands and I imagine we'll see some of that this year. If they go that route today, I hope they try to save salary room on some toolsy guys with low salary demands as opposed to just "guys." Should be an interesting day.
