So Braves guarantee him through age 28, get two club options, and max him out at 7M? Is that right? Coming off a 3.8 WAR season?
I wonder which side is the most reluctant to do an extension on Swanson.
passan saying he's heard from execs and other agents that are calling it the worst deal in history for a player - no hyperbole.
Hard to feel bad for guys that are seeing more money than ill ever dream of but i kind of do.
Something feels dirty about these deals.
Ahh gotcha. So it's essentially 8/39 and then we can give him another 3 million in picking up his option which would put it at 8/42 and then have the option the following year for buying him out for 4 million or giving him 7 million to stay.
No.
The first 7 years, he will be paid $31. Then if they were to buy him out after that, it would add $4 million, which is why it's being reported as 7/$35 guaranteed. If they pick up the option on year 8, it adds $3 million, making it 8/$38 million. If they buy him out after that year, it becomes 8/$42, or if they pick up the option it adds $3 more and becomes 9/$45.
So they will pay him either $35 million over 7, $42 million over 8(once they pick up the 8th year option, he will either get an additional $4 million for the buyout on top of that or the full $7 for year 9), or $45 million over 9.
I still think a huge part is that Acuna and Albies want to play together and they seem to really enjoy playing on the Braves. It also appears the Braves window of winning is fairly large. Honestly is a little refreshing to see some players not making it all about the money.
Agreed. I'm conflicted when we complain about greedy athletes, and then saying Albies and Acuna got ripped off.
These extensions may have allowed the Braves to punch well above their weight in payroll capacity.
So the cost of a Swanson extension is approximately...
$20M over 9 years and a high-five from Chipper?
