BRAVES FINAL DRAFT SIGNING BOARD: Backstrom on board!

I wonder how much pool money is left and where it goes on the third day guys. I don't imagine there's enough to get more than three or four of them, but there appears to be some good tools with these guys.

Certainly the big question is how many they actually sign.

I don't know, but we better sign the Backstrom kid. A young high schooler with 70 hit and power? Isn't that typically first round type stuff? Why was he still there?

70 hit and power in a HS kid would be the best hitting prospect in history. Even a projected future 70/70 on those tools would be a slam dunk #1 overall pick assuming the kid could actually throw a baseball and physically run to 1B, and isn't a serial killer. That's essentially Vlad Jr right now as a prospect...so that blurb is complete nonsense.

I would take these rosey prpjections with a huge grain of salt.

Yeah, that seems super weird. I can see a Raw Power 70 FV and even a 50 FV hit making sense if it was 20/20 Present, but that’s still pushing it for where we took him.

I’d be curious to see what Law had to say about other overslot prep players taken. He’s never been the type to overinflate grades to my recollection.

Right, that’s why the Law post caught me off guard with the positivity. He’s always been more pessimistic on prospects than most writers. But obviously the 70/70 part feels pretty crazy.

Turns out I misread the Backstrom part. Haha. Here’s the quote: “Backstrom has 70 raw and hit better at the end of the spring after getting his vision checked out.“

Sorry about that!

Nonetheless the kid is a great pick on day 3 - take a look at his videos and let me know who he reminds you of body wise... obviously he’s raw but this is the kind of flyer who go overslot for assuming you are able to spread out the dollars prudently across the higher FV round 1 guys.

Even 70 raw seems a bit off.

There are 3 guys in the FG 2019 draft board with 70 current or projected raw power, and only one of the wasn't a college player. I’m not sure how that kind of power was missed by FG unless all the other tools are so bad the kid won’t be able to play baseball.

It’s possible that the people Law spoke to were at the events where he posted 100+ mph Exit Velocities. That and his frame would suggest some major power potential. But if his current hit/game power tools are 20s due to vision issues, it would be reasonable for people to count him out and be wrong to do so.

Vision issues can be corrected.

Grade 70 raw power is more like 110+. If this kid was hitting missiles 100+ At 18, that could certainly project to 70 raw in the future. That projection is based on body type and physical maturity, neither of which we have any data about.

I mean, I agree with you on 70 not feeling quite right. Just trying to think of how someone could throw that grade on him and have Law get on board given Law’s usual skepticism.

Do we know with 100% certainty that Vlad Jr isn't a serial killer? He wouldn't be the first Vlad.

Brandon Parker made a verbal commitment to sign with the Braves before he was drafted in the 10th round and has agreed to terms. Passing on Dallas Baptist, where is younger brother will also play. Family flying to ATL first of the week, guests in a suite for a signing ceremony.

Seriously, thanks. These are really appreciated

In an effort to be as creepy as possible, I did some social media stalking of our six high school picks in rounds 11-19:

Mahki Backstrom graduated from high school on Friday. He had a huge Braves logo on top of his graduation cap, so I’ll take that as a good sign.

Vaughn Grissom’s Instagram bio has “ballplayer for the Atlanta Braves” in it.

Those two, plus Jared Johnson saying he’s signing, would give us a really strong foundation for those late rounds.
