Braves in talks with DBacks for Trevor Cahill

For a rebuilding team, this is a better move than start the clock of someone else.

And if he does well, rebuilds his value, Atl can get a prospect or even keep him next year, yes i know it's unlikely.

And that would be great. But, this is the explanation for every single trade we make. "Maybe we can rebuild his value and trade him." Remember if teams wanted him they could have had him. Things can change, but I don't really buy the argument.

Cahill isn't a 2/3 guy, but he isn't an over the hill pitcher with no upside. Unfortunately this seems to be what this debate has detoured into.

I seriously cannot fathom how people are frowning down on this move. I'm okay with being apathetic towards it, but there seriously is no legitimate downside. I cannot be convinced otherwise.

He's not a 2/3 pitcher. He's a 4ish ERA guy. A spot that would hopefully be filled by a young guy with potential if possible.

Possible...but I would suspect a move to a slower infield with what should be good defense up the middle and a pitching coach who made his money off a sinker can bring Cahil closer to what he was thought of when he first came to the big leagues. There was a time when people thought he was going to be an ace. He won't be there obviously but he could still be a good #3.

Certainly. The only downside is if he blocks someone else. Or Elander comes out of nowhere.

I think a plausible case could have been made for retaining either Heyward or J. Upton. We weren't going to be able to keep both beyond 2015, so trying to get something more than a draft pick was in order. I agree that J. Upton is likely to remain the player he is (and that's pretty good). I guess I prefer Heyward a bit more because of what he may do in the future. I think he has the higher ceiling.

I think he could have the higher ceiling, but the indicators weren't trending in that direction to this point given the lack of power and trouble with lefties. The main reason I'd have made the Heyward deal instead is that Justin probably doesn't get you Miller and Jenkins. The Cardinals need was in RF, and everybody's seen the difference in their defense. As you mention, we needed immediate rotation help.

Now if Heyward could've gotten us Tyson Ross, a pitching prospect similar to Jenkins, AND one of San Diego's corner OF prospects, you'd REALLY have been able to get by with just trading him - then you could've spent money on the rotation moving forward. To be honest, that might've been a better deal for both teams. We could have played Renfroe or Liriano in RF and spent the Markakis' money on another SP. The Padres could have spent the difference in Jason and Justin's salaries replacing Ross with a stopgap until Wisler or Fried was ready and have had Heyward in CF instead of Myers.

I'm not sure we have any good defenders except for Simmons.

Weren't we going to flip Wandy for a prospect at the deadline?

He was a potential option to flip as were all the guys that were signed basically. The whole point was to try as many as possible and hope some worked. They just upgraded Wandy. Shoulnd't you be happy or will you just hate everything the Braves do from here moving forward?

You can only flip guys who have a good 1st half and teams view them as players that can help them make a playoff push. Nobody is going to be flipped right now, the goal is to accumulate as many of these type players as you can get and hope you are able to trade a couple of them. Might not be able to trade any but that doesn't mean you don't try.

Well I think Cahill isn't good. So no, I'm not that thrilled. If he is, it just gives us a worst draft pick. And I do hate that we have given so much money to garbage but we couldn't afford any premium talent.

5.5 mil is alot of money?

Interesting.

Still mad they traded Babe Ruth oops i mean Heyward.

I really believe that's what it boils down to. People loved Heyward so much that they are willing to question the front office's every move from this point forward. Funny thing is they hate Markakis and he put up similar numbers to Heyward last year. Obviously isn't as good defensively but there isn't a massive difference between the two offensively, at least not yet.

You better believe if Cahil has a bounceback year that they will consider using those option years. 13M for a good #3 (hopefully a #2) is real cheap.

We have younger, cheaper options ready to take the next step. You ride Cahill to the deadline and hope he pitches well enough to warrant a good prospect in return. Extremely likely he will not be here past this year, no matter how well he pitches.
